Reviewed January 20, 2008

My husband and I visited Lalati on the first leg of our honeymoon. After a very long trip - 20hrs flying from Scotland, 2.5hrs in a taxi and 45mins boat trip - we realised Lalati was going to be very special as we arrived and were handed cold towels, fruit punch and banana bread. We were met on arrival by the resort owner Jane and shortly after were introduced to her husband Clint. Jane and Clint are always available to answer questions, organise anything you need or make suggestions on activities or dining options. It's lovely to have them eat meals with everyone and really makes you feel like Lalati is a home from home rather than a resort.

As a great deal of other reviews have said the people here really make the experience extra special. You cannot go anywhere without hearing calls of "bula" and people asking about your day. All the staff remember your name which again makes the whole experience feel much more personal.

We were lucky enough to stay in the honeymoon bure and it was so spectacular. Jane's attetion to detail is unbelievable and it was really perfect. The only problem we had when we were there was the mosquitos. It was really hard to enjoy the outside space as nothing seemed to deter them.

The food was spectacular and I can't remember feeling hungry once. This however didn't stop me munching my way through the fresh cookies which magically appearing in our bure everyday. If you get the opportunity have a meal out on the pier. It was one of the most romantic moments of my life.

The weather can be unpredictable in this part of the world and we had four good days and three bad days. However after the mayhem of planning our wedding I was glad for the excuse to stay in the bure, watch dvds, go to the spa and take it easy.

I can't imagine a more perfect honeymoon experience than Lalati. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes it so special. We loved the people, the attention to detail, not having to book activities days in advance, all the evening activities and the total romance of it all. Go to Lalati for a magical honeymoon. You won't be dissapointed.

Lalati was amazing and the perfect place for a honeymoon in paradise! We stayed 10 days at Lalati, 8 of them in the honeymoon bure which was worth every penny! It is absolutely gorgeous with your own hot tub, outdoor shower, outdoor courtyard, and waterfall. Very romantic!

The food was excellent - five star meals three times a day. Additionally, you have the option of dining alone on the pier, on your veranda, or with the other guests.

The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They were quick to help us plan any activity we liked... from snorkel trips to kayaking around the island, to a day trip on Storm Island. Everyone was so kind and always had a smile on their face. Lalati has the perfect amount of activities available; however, the hammoks on the veranda, the pool, and the spa make it very easy to decide to have a low key afternoon!

Our favorite activities were our discovery shore dive and the two open water dives we did. Words cannot describe the beauty of the reef and the sea life! We saw sharks, sea snakes, frog fish, lion fish, and all kinds of soft coral, just to name a few.

We were also impressed with how environmentally friendly Lalati is. For example, the water in each bure comes from rain water collected on the roof!

Overall, Beqa island is the most beautiful place we have ever seen. The island and the reefs are pristine and stunning! We would definitely stay at Lalati again!

Lalati is a very special place. It was a perfect vacation. Beqa Island is remote, pristine and well worth the fun journey to get there. There are no cars or roads on the island, only footpaths connecting the Fijian villages.

The staff was wonderful and felt like family. There is no tipping at the resort, and you feel that people are being nice to you because they are sincerely kind and friendly.

My husband and I normally need the first four or five days of a vacation to “wind down” before we feel relaxed. We both noticed that at Lalati we were completely relaxed within a few hours of arriving. We have never experienced such “immediate relaxation” on a vacation before. It made the whole week seem longer since we mellowed out so quickly.

The owners are warm, welcoming and attentive to your needs without imposing on your privacy. Likewise, manager Beato makes sure you are happy and looks after your every request (before you think of it). Beato is very funny and personable and you won’t want to say goodbye to him at the end of your vacation!

The spacious accommodations (Bures) are beautiful, luxurious, extremely private and well-maintained. Fresh flowers are kept in the bathroom and living areas.

Beato prepares amazing meals that defy the remoteness of the resort! I have never eaten so well in my life. The food is truly gourmet and plentiful. The kitchen is careful with any special dietary requests (one of the guests was a vegetarian and seemed very happy with her meals). Meals are served at a large group table, but guests are welcomed to eat privately at their own table if desired.

The resort offered many non-diving activities – hikes, trips to the village, spa treatments, kayaking, trips to a small island for a romantic lunch or dinner - Storm Island – and surfing. Our favorite activity was to kayak across the bay to a secluded cove and snorkel. It was a world class spot, by far the best snorkeling we have ever experienced. The pool/hot tub area is lovely – we spent most afternoons sitting by the pool in the shade with a good book and cold drink. The view from the pool area across the bay is amazing.

The dive boats left around 8:30 for a two tank dive. The dive shop picks up your gear on arrival and you don’t have to handle it again all week. Everything is set up for you and rinsed/stored after each dive. Hot chocolate and banana bread were offered during the surface interval. The dive sites were all within 10-20 minutes of the resort. Most of the diving was on pinnacles in Beqa Lagoon. Pinnacles were swarming with life – we saw the following plus much more: male ribbon eel, juvenile ribbon eel, lizard fish, lionfish, pipefish, Mertens’ butterflyfish, Ornate butterflyfish, regal angel fish, spine cheek anemone fish, jewel damselfish, fire dartfish, cleaner wrasse, orangeband surgeonfish, Moorish idol, yellow tang, clown triggerfish, pallid triggerfish, unicornfish, sea turtles, arc eye hawkfish, freckled hawkfish, knife razorfish, red-eye hovering goby, scythe triggerfish, crescent wrasse, two tone dart, signalfin goby, latticed sandperch, leaf scorpionfish, trumpetfish, blackspotted puffers, popcorn shrimp, spotted toby, saddled butterflyfish, humphead bannerfish, golden spadefish, orange spine unicornfish, clark’s anemonefish, longnose hawkfish, speckled damsel, blue and yellow fusilier, yellowtail coris, crinoid clingfish, octopus, emperor angelfish, two-spot snapper, steep-head parrot fish, three spot dascyllus, white spotted puffer, bi-color blenny, yellowstripe goatfish, bird wrasse, wedgetail triggerfish, longnose file fish, Picasso triggerfish, pyramid butterflyfish, black snapper, singular bannerfish, longfin bannerfish, masked bannerfish, black spot angelfish, mimic surgeon fish, barred rabbitfish, blackbar damsel, whiteband damsel, speckled damsel, midnight snapper, bi-color flag blenny.
We took one trip to Frigate’s Passage (a longer boat ride around the island) where we did some neat swim-throughs and saw several reef sharks.
I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about the resort, the dive operation or our vacation! It was perfect.

My wife and I recently spent our honeymoon at Lalati and loved every minute of our stay. Despite the poor weather (very unusual for this time of year) we had and excellent time and were very sad to leave. The owners and staff are amazing and make you feel right at home making departure very difficult. I would recommend this resort without hesitation and will ensure that we visit every time we're in Fiji! Thank you to everyone at Lalati!

There is a spectacular dive site close to Lalati Resort called "the Best of the Best." This is a perfect way to describe the resort itself.

We have been fortunate to have traveled all over the world, staying in overwater bungalows in Tahiti, and five-star hotels in Thailand, and so many other amazing spots. But we can enthusiastically say that this was our favorite place ever.

We could shower praise over everything at Lalati: First, the meals are incredibly delicious. (We're vegetarians, who don't even eat fish, and they were kind enough to accommodate our special needs. They not only met our expectations, but far exceeded them! Our mouths water just thinking about the food there!) Second, the setting is gorgeous - completely pristine, undeveloped South Seas paradise with lush green mountains and azure waters. Third, the activities are delightful. If you love to dive or even snorkel, this place is heaven - far better diving than even Australia's Great Barrier Reef or the Red Sea in Egypt. You can also have a romantic picnic at a nearby island, hike into the jungle, go kayaking, or just relax in your hammock. There are many cultural events as well, from traditional Fijian singing and dancing to firewalking.

But the people are by far the best part of Lalati. The owners are terrific, and every single member of the team is delightful. We have never had such wonderful service, with omnipresent smiles, and personal attention to details, and kindness, and laughter everywhere. We stayed only 7 days and it wasn't nearly enough. My fiancee cried when we left. We can't wait to go back!!!

Lalati Resort is expensive, but we loved it. They are eco-friendly, and no air conditioning, but the rooms were beautifully decorated and the food was great. All their Bures had 2 bedrooms which is perfect for the family or friends to share and save some $$. Diving in Beqa lagoon was diverse from sharks to nudibranch, and shore dive in front of the resort was an extra bonus. We saw frogfish, lionfish, and ribbon eel to name a few. Owners Jayne and Clint were wonderful hosts, and we did a sunset cruise to see fruit bats and saw Fire walkers of Beqa. Lots of activities are free of charge. We are definitely going back. This was the only resort who had a pier and did not need to get wet to land in Fiji.

BULA! we just spent the second week of our honeymoon in Lalati and it was truly relaxing and pefect. Overall the place is not cheap but you get top quality service and attention, down to all the little details, its really like having your own luxury tropical island for a week fair play to the owners Jane and Clint!

When we were there there was only one other couple so that made it 30+ staff to 4 guests..service was not a problem! The bure's are really luxury. if you can go for the honeymoon suite go for it its beautiful. no AC but you don't want it - there is plenty of breeze every night through the adjustable air window vents.

we really enjoyed the following activies:
1. Diving - I am a total beginner (had just got my PADI the previous week) but I got in 2 great days of diving there are so many spots
2. kayaking up to bat island and through the mangroves - beautiful!!
3. got in 3 days surfing at Frigates Passage - its great fun - we had it at an easy 3-4ft - bring reef booties if you like to go for the inside tube (not really makeable though!) - actually the break seems to work better at low tide in spite of what the "boys" will tell you - at high tide the water washes over the reef if its "off-shore" (no shore for 3km!) making it a bit bumpy - but at high time you will have the place to yourselves..
4. chilling in the hot tub after a hard day
5. playing rummikub with Clint
6. kava ceremony with the boys if you can play the ukelele you are in
heaven!
7. picnic on storm island - remember, if the boys say its going to rain at 1pm, its going to rain at exactly 1pm so heed their warning!!

I would rate the food as only average (for a 5-star) - due to the small size there is no choice and the head chef was away for the week
we were there - that was the only downside for us.

so thanks a million to all the great and friendly staff see you again we really hope!! Steve&Estela
