You will have to leave your transport at the entrance to the park and walk uphill. The hike is about 30 minutes depending on your fitness level. The views are amazing! This is a must see place! Don't forget the sunblock, hat, and water. There a restroom in the Orongo office building at the top. By the way, I recommend to rent a scooter (or car if you don't ride) while on the island.

Very windy up the top so carry a jacket or wind breaker. An extraordinary example of the lives of the early inhabitants of Rapa Nui. Read all you can in the reception centre before entering the park. You can only go in once.

The Orongo Trail (which has diagrams and explanations in English) takes you by the small houses (entered by claustrophobic tunnels which you can't enter thank goodness!) where the 'Birdman' Contest participants and followers stayed. Contestants had to swim the one mile to the island where the birds nest, collect an egg, swim back, climb the cliff and present the egg to their tribal chief.

This is a remarkable site not only in terms of stunning beauty but, as well, because you are both on the lip of a volcano and somewhat precariously perched about the ocean far below. The scenery is spectacular. The legend of the Birdman--the first one to retrieve a bird's egg from a rocky cliff on one of the tiny islands off the coast--is compelling and, naturally, the remains of an ancient village perched between the volcano's rim and the ocean--complete with ancient petroglyphs--is astounding. The Park Ranger is a most charming and welcoming person who will delight you with his stories and humour, Easter island is wonderful and the many Maois scattered about the Island are splendid, but the drive up the Mountain to Orongo--and the views from there are worth the effort. We rented a car for 24 hours from a great car rental agency, Insular rentals and this made both this visit and our wanders about the Island so much easier. And the driving is fine perhaps except for all the wild horses.

Started from the town and took the one and a half hour hike to the top on a well marked trail with nice stopping points along the way. Once to the top, the crater was a great reward and I walked around the rim to the visitor center and then hiked back down. From flat Florida so I made sure I stopped and rested at the different view points.
