Owner description: This lake-filled crater is filled with remnants of the Birdman cult practiced until 1867.

This is an amazing tradition the bird man ceremony and rituals, and this is the place where it all happened. The views are serb. The sotries even better, suggest getting a good idea who can make it come alive. The most surprising thing is the gigantic crater with a lake at the bottom. There are few place that have this combination of crater, near an ocean in the middle of nowhere, stunning. A perfect place for peace and inspiration. Close to downtown, easy access, thirty mins walk in the site.

We rented bike and took the 20 minute bikeride from town to the bottom of Orongo. Bikes were a bad choice! The road up to the volcano is steep, winding and long. Rent a car!

Pictures we saw did no justice to the beauty of this site. The houses and smaller islands with the history of the birdman competition make this a must see.

The view in the creater is amazing. I went there in the evening on foot.
I managed to go till Orongo sign not the village itself, as it was after working hours and the Village was closed. well, I could not do that legally at least. And of course there was nobodybto check the ticket, which I had forgotten at the camping site.

Since I had read about the birdman ritual, the feeling was different than if I didn't. I guess it just made me realise the hardships of the ritual. But I suppose if you get a knowledgeable guide it could be really interesting.

You need to show the ticket you bougth at the airport or buy one at the entrance.
It´s interesting to know a bit more about the Bird man competition and see how the houses looked like in the past.
a great view of the ocean and the islands Moto Nui and Moto Iti.
Better go by car, on foot is for those who really like to walk, by bicicle is ok on a cool day.
It´s beside the Rano Kau crater, a must do in Easter Island.

My wife and I hiked up to Orango. The walk is ok and the visitor centre has some interesting information but relative to some of the other sites on Easter Island, this one was simply ok. Should it be cloudy, I'd strongly recommend giving it a pass since you won't see much. If you do make your way to Orongo, it might be a little cooler or windier depending on the season.

Enjoy Easter Island....
