“Disabled access”

This hotel is fairly central to the various town amenities and not far from the harbour, however it is not suitable for totally wheelchair users as there are 2/3 steps up to the reception and the dining room and 2 steps down to our "Superior" bedroom, (were not able to be given an accessible room near to reception etc as earlier requested by my travel agent) and no ramp able to be provided. Fortunately I am able to walk a short distance and my nephew was able to lift my wheelchair up + down the steps. I had also requested a kettle/coffeemaker in my room but this was unable to be supplied on arrival but able to purchase for 2 dollars a flask of hot water to take to the room. Our room did not have an extractor fan in the bathroom so had to have the large top window open to let out the steam from the shower, and which did not have a insect repellant screen attached so intruders could get in if desired through the window. Fortunately their was air-conditioning as the patio doors could also not be opened in case the various cats, hens + birds ventured in as they were many + freely roamed the hotel grounds. The breakfast was satisfactory but if you wanted an evening meal you had to order it in advance and appeared to be limited choice. We chose to eat in the various local restaurants locally + our favourite was by the harbour(can't remember the name) but sitting on the patio you could watch the surfers in the sea. There was local supermarkets on the main street but no fridge in the bedroom for snacks/drinks etc.
We also had a problem with the fact that after ? 4p.m. ish during our stay the reception staff did nt seem to speak English, so if there had been an emergency in the evening we could have had a problem.
Overall if you are fit + don't expect to high a standard(in the Superior rooms) the hotel wassatisfactory for a few days stay.

Room Tip: Need to have a superior room which equals standard in other hotels i have stayed in + If possible as...

I was really blown away by the amount of plants and flowers at this property. Very lush, especially around the pool area. Nice rooms. Resort is small but very spread out due to the renovations they've done over the years. Hotel front desk is an open air area so don't expect luxury 5 star. In fact, if you fly LAN and get in before sunrise, prepare to wait several hours for your room to be ready, whether they have rooms available or not before your check in time. Breakfast is not much and be prepared for them to give you a hard time if you get there just before they close it. They won't wait around for you. Restaurants are very few on the island and very expensive. Don't expect locals to recommend one either. They can't afford to eat out, at least this is what they will tell you. I found a place next door to the Otai called La Tinita, I think, and you can get moderately priced meals there. The island caters to the South American travelers from the mainland and Europeans. Won't find too many Americans there, which can be very refreshing. Just be prepared for it to be different. Many people think when they come here it is like Hawaii. It's NOTHING like Hawaii. You will hear Rapa Nui spoken and that's about it. Most of the islanders are very friendly, if a little shy at first. They aren't prepared to have mass tourism on this place. There isn't the infrastructure to handle hundreds of thousands of visitors at one time. There's one gas station, one post office, one pharmacy, one grocery store, one church. You can walk the entire town in half a day. The rest of the island is remote, windy, and desolate in places. You definitely want to be in a group to get around outside Hanga Roa town. It is most definitely worth a visit if you are into ancient cultures, happen to have a few extra days when visiting Lima or Santiago, or just want to satisfy your curiosity about the Maoi. Also, I can't think of a better place for stargazing if you REALLY want to be away from any sort of light pollution. I had a wonderful time even though I was traveling alone, and I would go again if I had more people to enjoy it with me. Hotel Otai is a really nice place to hang your hat for a few days, but Easter Island as a whole caters to the more independent traveler. Don't go expecting a massive amount of tours and activities to be available.

Room Tip: Get one with air-conditioning and a refrigerator near the pool. You can keep cold drinks and sandwic...

Hotel Otai is a real gem. Nick Haoa, owner/manager, looks after all details.
Set in a lush "garden like setting", just across the road from the Post Office (don't forget to get your passport stamped). The hotel is very clean and modern with a good buffet breakfast. Ice is available from the front desk at no charge. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The more time spent at this hotel; the more you appreciate it! The location of this hotel was great. You could walk to both the harbor area, some of the moai, or into town. The setting is like a lovely park with flowers of all sorts everywhere. The pool area was hidden by some large palm trees and was a lovely spot to cool off after touring. The rooms were small and basic....definitely big differences in them based on where they were located. Ours was very basic and one complaint I had was that the screen had a huge tear in it, so for both security reasons and insect issues we were not able to open it for air. I did report it and ask for a change of room but they followed through by removing the screen. The room itself was clean. There was a small restaurant where breakfast was served. Breakfast was very sparce so I took to buying yogurt at the market in town and keeping it in the fridge in the room. Breakfast opened at 8 and by 8:45 not much food was left...food was basically fruit, breads, cereal, coffee, tea. There were several very lovely areas to gather and some of the rooms had rattan chairs outside to enjoy the lovely grounds.
The day we arrived; we were very early @ 7:30am but they were able to get us into the breakfast at 8 and to our rooms by 9:30 . On the day we were to leave; they had us check out by 10 but kept 2 rooms available for bathrooms and changing rooms..I thought this was excellent since we weren't leaving until 2:30 in the afternoon. Easter Island was a place caught in time. the pace is easy going and friendly. The entire island is a National Park and they place great pride in their culture. Tourism is low key...restaurants are small and some will run out of what is on the menu. No one stresses over the petty stuff we sometimes expect everyone to provide for us. . This is not Europe or the USA, enjoy it for the wonderful place that it is.

Room Tip: Rooms from 213-219 appeared to be older rooms and more basic.

I liked this place. It's very basic but it was more than I needed. It was clean. Beautiful landscaping and had a nice pool. The staff was very friendly and helpful. For me the location was perfect. I would stay there again if I'm ever so lucky to visit Easter Island again.

Nice hotel in a pefect position close to the village centre and small harbour also short walk to the nearest maoi.Saw no ants as previous reviews. The room I had was great with a fantastic outdoor seating area(117) all rooms nearby seemed of the same quality although due to layout seemed of various sizes. The gardens and pool were well maintained and breakfast was adequate. For a centrally located hotel this is a great choice.Reception staff were helpful and they supply beach towels on request.

Room Tip: Ask for a room between numbers 115 and 130 (closest to pool)

I was totally unprepared for the invasion of creepy little ants that seem to be EVERYWHERE on the island. The O'tai hotel wasn't spared of the creepy crawlers. I saw them at the dining room, at my room.

The room itself is quite comfortable, we used the A/C a few times in the afternoon but otherwise happy with the nice breeze through the sliding doors. The bed was large and comfortable but the sheets and towels themselves were pretty old. The bathroom is large with a nice shower/tub and we didn't have issues getting hot water.

The garden is very well maintained. There are tables and chairs by each building with a nice view of the garden. We picked up some drinks and snack at the market to relax outside.
There was free wifi available by the check-in desk. You can sometimes get a weak signal at the dining room but there's plenty of comfy bench space by the check-in area.
There's a small market within walking distance as well as couple of restaurants. They don't offer a mini-bar in the room but you get an empty fridge. It was great to keep snack and water there.
