“Do Not Miss”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Ahu Tongariki is a "do not miss" site of Rapa Nui. Because of that, I'm sure it gets crowded with tourists but we visited around noon in early April and were almost the only people there. It's an absolutely stunning site and very easy to set up a camera on a timer to take a shot of yourself or family that appears as if nobody else is there.

The only disappointment is that I wish there were garbage cans at some of the sites (or at least bags distributed so that you could pick up trash and take it back to your hotel). In particular, there is trash that washes up on the rocks behind Ahu Tongariki and I would have liked to do my part to clean that up a bit.

“Probably the Most Photogenic of the Ahus”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

It's a nice walk from Rano Raraku to Ahu Tongariki, and once you get there you will be overwhelmed by the site of the 15 Moai facing Rano Raraku. Make sure to walk all around them to also get a rear view of the statues, it makes for a great photograph, particularly at sunrise.

“must see at sunrise”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Make sure you walk around the back. The construction of the Ahu is just as impressive and you can see the crater in the background.

“Amazing place for sunrise!”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

I was so lucky to be here for my birthday this year and came to Ahu Tongariki for the sunrise on my birthday! Was so nice to sit with a few friends and watch the sun come up behind all the statues! Get there nice and early to beat any of the rush (luckily there weren't any tour buses that morning!) and get a seat on one of the mounds. The group of us enjoyed breakfast (and some pisco sour!) while watching the sun rise. There were a few storm clouds in the distance but instead of a downpour we saw a 'double rainbow'! Was fantastic! The statues themselves are amazing and all appear different in shape and size. Very magical and beautiful location! Worth the trip to see it in the afternoon as well once the sun is in a different position.

“Must Visit!”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

You must visit this very famous site. You will get all of the history of these restored Moai. I highly recommend taking time to see this area and spend some time in the area. We did come across a few wild horses which made the experience even better.
