We walked here on a trail from outside the village, nice hike through the woods. The crater is a special experience and should not be missed. The Orongo village on the rim can also be visited.

At this site in Rapa Nui or Easter Island, one gets to see early petroglyphs. They are fading fast, so this is a must see soon! You will also get to see another view of the Orange Cratet with the rocky shores and even the town serving as a backdrop.

We drove up to the crater, parked at the side of the road and did our morning jog. Nice vantage point to see Hanga Roa from up high. Cows we encountered along the way made the jog interesting as they were blocking the road.

We started too early and finished before Orongo opened.

We walked from the east base of Rano Kau to the top of the crater (a little steep, but worth the effort) and then around the crater to the Orongo village, place of the Birdman ritual competition. That was some 7 kilometers total, in a couple of hours.

The volcano, the village and the Kao Kao, Iti and Nui islands make a whole set. It is not difficult to imagine how the scenario may have encouraged the Birdmen.
