“Awesome to see where the moai were carved.”

With giant moai sticking up from the ground, this place is a spectacular sight. If you take the walking path, you can see Ahu Tongariki in the distance. Beautiful colors and beautiful moai. A must see!

“Birthplace of the magical Moai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

One of the must visits. We would strongly recommend a guide to get the low down on the site, ours was Paul from Tekarera who was excellent. A bit of a space race going on, you have to wonder if the largest Moai were just vanity projects with no hope of being transported and erected without fracturing.

Be warned that they no longer sell tickets at the gate, we got turned away and had to come back another day (they had literally just changed the rules and some flexibility would have been welcome as not publicised, even our tour guide didn't know). The main ticket office was also shut when we arrived so the best thing is to buy the park entrance ticket at the airport before you get your baggage.

Annoyingly only open during set hours so you can't get sunrise photos here, shame.

“Unforgettable. One of the nicest places I've been”

It is not only the statues, it is all the story around it, everything about the history of Easter island is amazing, and this is one of the main places. Great photos can be taken here.

“One of my special places on Rapa Nui”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

This was the quarry where most of the huge Moai were carved. It is a large hill with stunning views over to the coast and Ahu Tongariki. As well as the views you will find Moai is various stages of disrepair sort of scattered over the hill. You can also see the largest Moai still not finished as well as clearly see that the statues were literally carves out of the rock on the hill.as one is still partially attached to the rock. It is quite a climb along the path but a pleasant walk as you see so many of these moai. You can also walk to the top to see the crater lake which is very pretty as well a being interesting.

This is one site where you have to show your National Park ticket so don't forget it.

There are toilets here at a cost of $1 US per person per visit!! They are quite clean which i would expectat that price.

There is a picnic area which is where we had lunch which was included in the price of the day long trip.

There was a shop for souvenir which were pretty siilar to the other around the island and equally expensive too.

“Amazing Variety - Best Visited with a Guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

The quarry may not sound too inviting, but it's a premier spot on Easter Island that should NOT be missed. You now must stay on the established paths that lead along the cliff, but they pass a lot of interesting items - beginnings of maoi, broken ones, unique ones, artisan samples (?!). It's best visited with a good guide who can point out things and explain them to you. Enjoyed our visit, even if it was a bit tricky trying to avoid the numerous other (larger & more sluggish) tour groups there while the cruise ship was docked!
