Reviewing the recent postings about the hotel and having just returned this week, I can certainly see where some guests would love it and others would have qualms.

I am in the middle.

No question, operating a luxury resort out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is a challenge.

The attention to details and concern for the experience of the guest are impressive and worthy of praise. It seems there are areas for reasonable critique, if addressed, could move the property into the category of the great resorts of the world.

Great guides but if you listen carefully to the perfect English, sometimes the words do not fit into a meaningful explanation. One guide was great until I listened attentively and couldn't figure out what she was actually saying. Others like Carlos were superb on all levels.

Then the food. ..beautifully presented but after a couple of meals it all looked remarkably similar in appearance and often taste. Lunch was presented exactly like the evening meal. I would really have liked the opportunity for a sandwich or soup at lunch and not a similar presentation of fish or tenderloin as the evening meal. Meals at a resort like this should present surprises and not become routine.

Our best surprise was a couple with us went fishing, and the hotel prepared four of the catch for our appetizer that evening. Delicious. The same two salads and three dressings were offered everyday at lunch and dinner with the meal. Maybe have different salad choices.

And a shoutout to Carlos the bartender, the best!!!

Several reviews have commented on water bottles. We each were presented one in our room with the invitation to take home with us as souvenirs.

Hotel had great new comfortable vans.

This is a great property. . . with tweaking and more surprises in the dining room, it could become a world class resort.

Let's hope for the best!!!

Room Tip: Upgraded to a corner suite that was grand!!!

I was amazed by the review by "zynka". He seems to forget he was staying at a modern facility on an Island which is literally in the middle of nowhere.
Staff were exceptional from Claudia the manager down and the guides very knowledgeable. The complainant knew the price in advance and it is truly "all inclusive". Drinks are unlimited and free and wines are of very decent quality. Perhaps he should have read more about what one goes to Rapa Nui for. Complaining about having to stand in front of 15 Muai statutes (one of the most stunning experiences I have had the good luck to undertake) demonstrates that he/she had somewhat bizarre expectations from Easter Island.
The architecture of the hotel is stunning, having been modeled on an ancient form of housing and the views are a pleasant combination of fields and seas.
We found the planning of our stay to be comprehensive and excursion plans for our entire stay were discussed and agreed as soon as we arrived.
Overall I consider our experience at the Explora to be outstanding and unique

You might be reading this review to find out....is it "worth it"? Between the expense of Explora and the effort to get to Easter Island...it is quite a commitment. But is it worth it...YES on all accounts! We can't imagine a better introduction to this mysterious Island and the amazing Rapa Nui than Explora. From the incredible architecture.....small but beautifully designed rooms (you will spend little time in them anyway) to the wonderful food and amazing service...everything is as it should be. Some of the excursions were on the challenging side (for us) and it made the journey that more amazing. Gina......you gave us a day we will remember forever. Martin let the island come to life for us ....from a day at the beach to the fantastic tuna fish empanadas on the way to town our final day (that only come second to soup dumplings in Shanghai) The Pisco sours at the bar had a special touch and came with a huge smile from our new friend Carlos. Meals were wonderful and if we made one mistake...it was not staying a 4th night. and maybe bringing a backpack that held a water bottle (I think this should be provided for use during your stay) or hiking pants which I bought at the Explora store. (no backpacks available) (and maybe its time to upgrade the resorts vans) Nitpicking and that is hard to do here.....really. The Moai were as impressive as we imagined but so were the craters and landscape of the island in general. Our excursions were arranged in a perfect arc thanks to Beno..... that opened our eyes to a world we have seen for so many years in pictures. It is hard to manage expectations and Explora did it (and then some) We left with a tear in our eye hoping to one day return.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any room. The hotel is designed to spend the most time in the wonderful public spaces.

I gave the hotel a 4 for:
1. Allowing us to change the dates of our prepaid stay (this was beyond the rate rules)
2. Very good drinking water and good bread
3. Overall good food
4. Great staff at the restaurant and the bar
5. Free WiFi at the bar

I consider major drawbacks of the facility:
1. During the night and early morning the reception door is closed and nobody picks up the phone there. It is not possible to contact anybody from the staff. This is scary, when thinking about security.
2. No coffee or tea in the morning (no coffee maker; restaurant is closed until 7.30 AM). The only way to have coffee when you wake up is to take it from the bar in the evening and drink cold in the morning.
3. Lack of information about the program. Decisions about the tours are made every evening for the next day. No advance planning for the whole stay.
4. The hotel has very old vans for transfers and tours (the worst transportation ever offered to me by a hotel)
5. The room had an interesting design, but was rather small with only basic furnishing (no carpeting, no coffee maker, no place for luggage, no drawers). The view is nice, but not overwhelming . The rooms face agricultural fields and have a distant (over 1 km) view of the ocean.
6. For lunch and dinner (à la carte) the menu consists of only two main dishes to choose from. This is extremely poor for a 1600$/day hotel. Cheap wines are included in the rate. Higher quality wines are available for purchase.
7. There is no room service, no snacks between the meals, no food for purchase.
8. You may receive an extra service from the hotel, when you specifically ask for it (for example a sandwich to take to the room after breakfast), but there is no information what extra services are possible.
9. Our main tour guide was a misunderstanding. There was only very little logic English language communication and the tours were organized to be very boring (for example staying for over 1 hour in front of the 15 moais). There was no benefit of seeing the moais with this guide compared to sightseeing alone with a rented car (car rental in the town is about 70 US $ per day). The volcano tour and the boat ride were with other guides and they were great.
10. There were no private tours (which is a pity, because most important attractions may be seen in one day).

Minor drawbacks:
11. After making a credit-card secured online reservation, we were approached by the hotel with multiple e-mails with the request to immediately make the payment for the full stay (otherwise they would cancel our credit card-secured reservation). Than we received another set of e-mails with the request to fill out various forms.
12. At check-in we were required to sign a statement that we received safety information, which was not true
13. The front desk staff is was not capable of helping with minor issues
14. The bellboy brought our luggage to the room. He did not care about helping us to put the bag on a rack. One piece of luggage got lost between the transfer van and our room (we then found it at the reception). Upon check-out we asked the bellboy to take 4 pieces of our luggage. He said OK and took only 2 of them.
15. There was a slide presentation with basic information about Explora hotels, but the slides we not visible (I guess the projector lamp was old or the quality of the projector was poor)
16. The breakfast offer was very limited, based mainly on eggs
17. The cleaning was very good, bt we received only one small miniature of shampoo for the whole stay. No replacements every day.
18. An information sheet in the room indirectly suggests a tip of at least $100 (!) and to leave it at the reception (!) upon check-out

Overall, the hotel makes multiple savings. Some of them are justified by the eco-style of the facility, but most of them are not. Otherwise the facility is generally OK and the stay was nice, but I find the hotel extremely overrated and overpriced.

From the wonderful manager Claudia, to the great guides Carlos and Nuku, the staff here are fabulous. The guides are knowledgable, smart, dynamic and fun.

Yes it is expensive but it is worthy the splurge. Everything is included and the Pisco Sours alone are a worthy reason to visit ! Food is diverse and excellent quality.
The island is a magical place and Explora lodge just adds to the splendor.
Location is perfect, food is perfect, trips are perfect. Add it to your "must stay" list.
We had a suite and it was spacious, light and airy.

Sad it had to end after 5 days!
