this was our second stay in Hosteria El Pilar! we enjoyed hiking and this is THE place for hiking in Chalten (hiking capital of Argentina)! we have 2 girls (5 & 8) and we live in the big city so we are seeking for peace in NATURE! Hosteria del Pilar is like a fairy tqle house!!! Guille & Cris are THE BEST HOSTS in Patagonia! they love what they do & they are certainly great at it! follow Guille recommendations for hikes! he knows what he is taking about! but the one who runs the show at El Pilar is called COCA... the most loving & hairy cat we've seen! she will decide where you will seat!! jajaja Dinners consist of 3 courses and there are always 2 options! both are AMAZING! we did 2 hikes... Poincenot & Piedra del Fraile and we enjoyed them very much! Poincenot is very visual & sometimes crowded with some amazing views of Mount Fitz Roy! Piedra del Fraile is a great option if rainy since you are always walking in the forest & it is amazing for birding! we saw 30huge magellanic woodpeckers! and you get to a mountain refuge (with restrooms & french fries) which are always great incentives for the kids! we also did a short navigation in Lago del Desierto which was another highlights! the boats leaves at 11:30am & then at 2pm! as we were coming back to the basic dock Mount fitz Roy cleared up for us! Our only regret is that we only stayed 2 nights... we need 2 more at least!

We recently returned from a two week trip to Patagonia. During our trip we had the opportunity to stay four nights at Hosteria El Pilar in El Chalten, Argentina. What a wonderful find! The location is at the beginning of the trail. How nice to finish a long day and arrive "at home" The staff was excellent, the rooms were spacious and clean, and the food was wonderful. The staff was so helpful. One evening my wife felt a little ill and they went out of the way to make fresh soup and toast. You won't get that treatment at the Four Seasons! Many thanks to Guillermo and Christina for making our stay so relaxing.

Room Tip: We stayed in #8 at the end of hotel. Large, quiet and relaxing. No problems with room noise.

We just finished 2+ weeks in Southern Patagonia. Hosteria El Pilar was my favorite place to stay in Southern Patagonia. We hiked to there from the town center of El Chalten, but you get there by car. The place is located by a river next to a forest. In a clear weather you get great views of Fitz Roy from the dining room. The Hosteria has no phone, no TV and no Wifi, but it has great ambience, large rooms, excellent food and superb service. Several of us are vegetarians and they fixed creative delicious food for us. All the staff were great, in particular Guillermo and Christina.

On the positive side this is a magical place. The hotel is located 17km from El Chalten down a bumpy gravel road. It really does feel like you are staying in the middle of no where and the views are absolutely stunning. The hotel is surrounded by mountains and and on good days there are magnificent views of Mount Fitzroy.

The hotel itself is incredibly pretty, with bags of charm and character. The rooms are comfy and the hotel is eco friendly, generating its own power, recycling where it can, etc... The area is so pristine that the drinking water comes straight from the river, there aren't many places in the world left where you can say that. Food every night was amazing and the wine was exceptional.

The managers of the hotel are wonderful and really make this place. They really do care. The hotel has a relaxed feel and you are encouraged to make yourself at home. The managers were a wonderful source of information for walks and hikes, including some outside the park. There is a hike to laguna los tres from right outside the hotel, although this doesn't seem to be marked on some older maps, but the path is clear. Lots of tour companies start from here as the climb up is a bit gentler than the path from town. We spent 5 days there but could easily stayed longer given all the hiking options (but you would need a car to reach these).

Now the downside, the walls are paper thin to the point where you can make out the words being said next door. Given that most people staying here are fellow hikers looking for peace and quiet this probably isn't a problem but we were unlucky enough to have a room next door to a family with 4 very excited children under the age of 7.

This hotel is small, so there was no getting away from them. After the second morning of being woken up at 6am in the morning, we asked to move rooms. The hotel managers were very supportive, talking to the parents and then helping us to move as soon as one became available, but it did take the shine off the place, particularly as our main reason for staying there was to enjoy the peace and quiet of the location.

Hosteria El Pilar is a small hotel about 17 km outside of El Chalten at the trailhead for the the hike up to Laguna de Los Tres (Cerro Fitz Roy). We stayed there for 5 nights and had a wonderful time. Physically, the hotel is a small, rambling structure that has been added to over time. The living/dining area is warm and welcoming with a wonderful fireplace and well positioned wood stove. If you are environmentally minded, electricity at the hotel is provided by a micro hydro-electric installation 150 or so meters upstream...far enough away that you cannot hear the turbine.

Staff at Hosteria El Pilar has redefined personable, friendly service for me. It's more like staying with a close friend than in a commercial establishment. The food was excellent for both breakfast and dinner. They were happy to provide sandwiches for day hikes and excellent advice about local trails. Charmingly on staff is Coca, the house cat who was friendly and provided great entertainment in the evenings! If you are entertained by such things, have a look at the table legs in the dining room. It's quite clear that Coca has "been there" :)

A couple of things to be aware of. As with most places in Argentinian Patagonia, the septic systems will not support toilet paper so it is necessary to put used paper in a trash can. For North Americans, this may be disconcerting. It in no way detracts from the hotel. It's just a simple fact of life. The second thought is that there are really 3 good day hikes out of Hosteria El Pilar => Laguna de Las Tres, Piedra Fraile/Marconi Glacier and Dos Huemules. If you care to hit some of the other hiking trails such as Cerro Torre you're going to have to rent a car or be prepared to take a taxi back into town.

Highly recommended! We had a wonderful time and there is nowhere else I would like to stay in El Chalten!

Room Tip: I doubt there is a bad room in the place. Any of them would be fine. We enjoyed being able to open...

We stayed at the hosteria for 4 nights in January 2013.
El Pilar is located at the most beautiful setting, 17km from El Chalten's downtown but close to the beginning of some of the nicest trails (Laguna de Los Tres and Piedra Del Fraile). The rooms were very comfortable and warm, breakfast and dinner were great.
The staff (Cristina, Guillermo, Tomaso and Sebastian) was extremely warm and helpful.
The only con (if I can ever imagine any) is having small sitting area to hang out on rainy days or nights.
Will stay there for sure on our next trip to El Chaltén!!!

This is an amazing hostería! It's located a 20-30 min drive out of town, in a very pitoresque setting with a view of Fitz Roy. A perfect base for exploring the area, as many treks begin just outside of the hosteria. The house itself is very nicely decorated, don't expect Hilton-like luxury, but it is very authentic and cosy. The staff is the best, Guillermo and Cristina will help you with any problem, give great trekking-advice and they (and the rest of the staff) even cooked amazing dinner when the chef had his weekly day off - best bife de chorizo we had in Argentina!! Breakfast is also great, and they'll make you a lunch bag on request.

Stay here!! I would say a minimum of 2 nights.
