“Worth the splurge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2012

We had about a week in El Chalten and decided to split it up between this accommodation (near the east entrance of the los glaciares fnational park) and another one in town. Hosteria El Pilar is closer to the Lago de los tres and Glacier Rio Blanco walks, while El Chalten town is closer for walks to Laguna Torre and many other walks (as well as being more convenient for ice treking trips on Glacier Viedma and more dinning options). We had to go over budget a bit to stay here, but it was worth it.
Good: great room decor, modern bathroom, very friendly and helpful service, good breakfast with fresh fruits, free transfer to/from town at check-in/check-out and 3 course dinner available in their restaurant (at a cost of AR120 a person: a bit expensive). Note dinner service ends at 9.30pm so you can't get back from your hike too late.
Bad: Expensive to go into town (taxi cost AR120 one-way) so we just dined at their restaurant while we were there, no TV (good or bad), bathroom in Room 10 tight squeeze, Dinner service slow, upstairs footstep noises can be heard from our downstairs room (wooden floorboards).
We made some friends (fellow travelers) at the hosteria and had a look at their room. Some rooms were a lot more spacious, especially the bathroom, compared to others. We stayed in room 10. The view from the room was of the back garden of the lodge, so not much of one.

Room Tip: When Sebastian comes to pick you up from the bus terminal, ask him to stop by the supermarket in tow...

The best location in El Chalten area, the nicest staff, the best food and comfortable "old" style hotel. I would go back in a heartbeat and recommend highly to anyone going to El Chatlen, but reserve well ahead. We used it as our base for long day hikes to Laguna Torre and Laguna de los Tres. This is what a mountain hotel should be. Reserve now!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Cerro FitzRoy for when the sun rises and bathes FitzRoy in pink

No words can best descibe the magic and beauty of El Pilar. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon and we left with tears of joy and wonderment. The hosts, Cristine and William are beyond spectacular. Sebastian who also works on site was just incredible and so nice. The food is 5* and the wine collection superb. El Chalten in itself was the highlight of our whole 6 week trip around SA. The views from El Pilar are incredible with Mount Fitztroy pearing down at you from almost every angle you stand from. The people we met staying here also were just so nice. I have tears writing this as i remember the euphoria. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU, El Pilar and its people will always be in my heart.

Tucked into the Andes Mountains, with views of Mount FitzRoy from the window, Hosteria el Pilar can be found up a rocky, bumpy 17 km windy road that is well worth driving. Waking up to a golden sunrise reflecting on the ice of Mount FitzRoy is an unbelievable experience. We spent a week at the Hosteria, taking day long hikes to different sections, as well as ice trekking on the Viedma Glacier, and the Hosteria is in a perfect location for such activities. Our hosts were fantastic; knowledgeable about all of the trails in the area, as well as making sure that our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. We went to the local town of El Chalten on one occasion to try a recommended restaurant, which was OK, but not in the same league as the meals we ate at the Hosteria. Breakfast was not only included in the tab, but was quite substantial. Dinner was extra, but well worth it. The food was splendid and, after a bit of Malbec wine, there is nothing like simply walking upstairs to your room. Plus, the portions are not too big, but big enough that the leftovers can be eaten at lunch the next day. We’d return at the drop of a hat. One of the few places that we’ve stayed in over thirty years of travel that simply had no negatives.

Room Tip: Our room, #3, was on the top floor providing a great view.

We did not stay in this hotel, but I had my fondest lunch in Patagonia here. We stop-by on our way to Laguna Torre after two nights of backpacking at the lovely Laguna de los Tres and the so-so Lago Electrico.

The dining room is cute, small and cozy. The steaks on the table next to us looks deliciously juicy, but they require advance reservation. We only have three food options on the spot:
1) cold cuts, nuts, olives, sundried tomatoes with bread
2) raspberry tart
3) sandwich

We ordered (1) & (2). We were not expecting a nice presentation and were pleasantly surprised when (1) came. It is very delicious for what it is. One order was enough for two people. The raspberry tart is large too and will probably fill 3-4 people's dessert stomach.

It is a real treat to have lunch here in the middle of a backpacking trip.

In a nutshell, El Pilar is a gem. The facilities, location, staff, service, food, hiking, and views are outstanding. We spent one week at El Pilar, and are so happy that we stayed that long because it gave us time to hike and explore, and when the weather was bad, we could snuggle up and read at the hotel. (Every hike was beautiful, and perhaps Rio El Diablo, Lagos Tres, and a trek on Viedma Glacier were our favorites). The staff made us feel as though we were guests in their home and someone was always around to gaily answer questions and suggest hikes. We rang in the New Year with a delicious feast in their cozy dining room, and really enjoyed talking to the other guests and staff.
A few comments about logistics. We decided to rent a car in El Calafate after reading some of the reviews about the remote location of El Pilar, but we liked El Pilar so much that we rarely drove to El Chalten. The restaurant dinner portions are large enough to fill up for dinner and have left-overs put aside for lunch the next day, which we brought hiking. We did buy nuts, raisins, and fruit in El Calafate, which has a larger grocery store than El Chalten.
If you are looking to get away to a clean, cozy, and comfortable hotel in a stunning location in the middle of nowhere, El Pilar is for you.

Room Tip: Ask for view of Mt. Fitz Roy

Beautiful location/views, extremely warm and gracious hosts Guillermo and Christina (who knew all guests by name), spotless simple rooms, hearty gourmet meals -- we did not want to leave after 3 nights. Guillermo was very helpful in explaining the trails to us (including letting us take photos of the hosteria's map). His passion and enthusiasm for the hiking was infectious. Very comfortable stay (plus it shortens the highlight trek to Laguna de los Tres).
