“Great little place”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

For a little place in the middle of nowhere this place not just suited the need but exceeded it.

It may not be a five star hotel but then again if that's what you want, stay out of Patagonia.

Room was clean, heated, a novel option in some places, bathroom was fine, bed was comfortable and the staff was great.

Neat little town with an amazing glacier trek

The Fitz Roy Inn makes Motel 6 look like the Four Seasons. We got stuck there because every other hotel in town was booked, but looking back, we wish we'd just slept in the car.

Our room was dirty, threadbare and musty. Worse, we think it had bed bugs. We never saw the actual bugs, but both my husband and I were bitten around our ankles during the night. The red, itchy welts appeared in telltale straight lines. You do the math.

When we informed the hotel management, they said they had only one other room to which they could move us, but because that room was a quintuple and we were only two people, the "cleaning girls would get too mad if we moved you there." (We were planning to leave the hotel immediately in any case, so that was no problem!)

Adding insult to injury, the sad little room cost $120 per night — egregiously overpriced. We ended up driving from hotel to hotel looking for a free room, and were lucky enough to snag the very last one available at Posada El Barranco up the street (close to the trailhead for the Cerro Torre hike). El Barranco was basic, but clean — 1,000 times better than Fitz Roy Inn, for two-thirds the cost. If you're looking for a budget option, it's a good one.

Otherwise, if you're staying in El Chalten, we'd suggest checking out Los Cerros or Poincenot first — both hotels were booked solid the nights we were in town, but they looked clean and well appointed and the staff were incredibly helpful. (The receptionist at Poincenot is the one who called around and found us a room at El Barranco.) Destino Sur, next door to the Poincenot, also looked really nice.

Whatever you do, avoid the Fitz Roy Inn.

We stayed at Fitz Roy Inn by necessity. The place we had been staying at - Pudu Lodge - was booked for the second night and they recommended Fitz Roy to us. The pricing is reasonable and the staff were very friendly, so we took it. The rooms are basic and the twin beds are very small, so compared to Pudu Lodge is was lacking (Pudu is the same price). The two big negatives were noise and cleanliness. The bathroom was pretty dirty but, more importantly, had an awful smell coming from it. On the noise front, there were several tour groups staying here and it's not possible to actually sleep until they are all tucked. The front door is very noisy and has some chimes hanging from it. Same goes for the morning. We were up at 6:30, when the first group arose and started shouting to each other in the hallway. Although the staff was great, I wouldn't stay here again but I'd recommend it to people who only need a place to sleep and plan on getting out early the next day.

We needed a place that accepted credit cards after retreating from our campground because of the rain, low on cash. It was perfectly fine. The room was at a similar price to the dingy hostels, but the crowd was more the "guided tour" variety than independent walkers. Didn't bothr us.

Stayed in a double room for two nights; was comfortable and clean. The hot water takes a while to arrive, but this is pretty typical for Patagonia. Not centrally located, but in a town this small it doesn't matter at all. We had a couple of people sick at this point on the tour, so having a "reading room" separate from the lobby was key for those who needed to spend a day resting after checking out of the rooms. Beware of the breakfast crunch - when too many people arrived at the same time, they ran out of dishes! It was funny watching them wash bowls as fast as possible.

If you consider yourself a traveller, and not a tourist, then you will just love El Chalten and the Fitzroy Inn. All the early climbing expeditions passed through its doors, so for me it reeks of history. There are other and far more comfortable hotels; if i had the money I would like a stay at the big red hotel - hell, why not? It is all experience. You go to the pointy end of south america - so take experiences home with you: the wind, the dust, the cold, the distances - makes you far more interesting over a dinner table that a whiner that wanted all the comforts of home. The beef they serve at the Fitzroy is just wonderful, the Mendoza yellow label wine goes just great with it. Try some Argentinian rolling tobacco, sold in unsealed packets, just like old fashioned tea packets - see the rizla go like a fuse! Try some Mate - share the tube, get lip herpes - be interesting!

Stayed there before and after trekking and an overnight in a tent . Good enough place. No problems. Didn't encounter a surly staff, as other TripAdvisor folks reported.
