The restaurant terrace overlooking the Rivière du Gouffre is a must in this pretty town.
Thanks God there was a last table for us 3 !
Service is thoughtful and food was great from the first course to the dessert.
You shouldn’t miss the roasted lamb in greens.
Count 65 CAD per person with French wine.

In Baie St. Paul with a romantic patio right along the river flowing through town. The service was friendly with the meal being 10 out of 10. The least expensive was $21 for a bison burger, but what a burger and fries. The other meal was a pork shoiulder and ribs to die for. With wine will cost in about $125 for 2 very high end meals.

If you go, choose the terrace. It is very comfortable and offers beautiful views of the Rivière du Gouffre. Staff was courteous and helpful. Food was very very good (the rillettes de lapin and the cocotte de porc especially were delicious).

Although the waitress we had had the prior two years must have moved on, we still enjoyed our visit. This year, the staff did seem a little overwhelmed and that took away a little from the experience, especially towards the end of the meal when the misquitoes become unbearable. However, the food was superb. My wife had the pork shoulder casserole, with potatoes, carrots, mushrooms and a maple based syrup that was to die for. My beef tartare started was Asian influenced and outstanding. Desserts were also great. Can't wait to return next year!

Le Mouton Noir (formerly Café du Mouton Noir) is an institution at Baie-St-Paul, existing for more than 30 years.

It seems to have had a change of vocation in the recents years, becoming a "grande table", offering high quality gastronomy, mostly from the Charlevoix region, with the matching price.

The menu offers a simple format of appetizers, main course and desert in between 32 and 40$ per person, with possible extras for dishes such as foie gras. The pricing is decent for what you get, considering how generous the plates are.

I chose a salmon tartare, with mango, that had a nice freshness to it. One of my companions chose the salad, that was rather ordinary. Their specialty dish, a braised porc cocotte with maple lives up to its reputation. Its very impressive, and so generous we could have almost been two on it. The other dishes were also outstanding, with a beautiful variety of seasonal vegetables (carrots, squash). The deserts were great, but not out of this world, like the main dish. A little too standard. The chocolate mi-cuit was... a very ordinary chocolate cake.

The service was not particularly friendly. The personnel dresses too casually in comparison with the cuisine. Our waitress was very hasty, not of much help and rushed to get on to other clients. She even forgot to serve us the amuse gueule that everyone around us received.

Still, it is one of the very best restaurants in Baie-Saint-Paul.
