We didn't stay at Gliffaes but booked dinner there as a result of reading about the Gliffaes restaurant in Anna Colquhoun's excellent book, Eat Slow Britain. The hotel has quite an old fashioned feel, yet the food is modern, adventurous and very delicious. Only surprising thing was the absence of Welsh wines on the wine list as all the rest of the food is locally sourced, and there are some fabulous local vineyards (see Sugarloaf Vineyard for example). It was raining when we were there, but in our dash to the hotel it looked like the gardens would be well worth a tour. I'll definitely aim to go back; I think the Michelin reviewers should take a trip there....

I booked 5 rooms and private dining at this hotel to celebrate my husband's 40th. And it was truly wonderful. Beautiful hotel, setting is stunning. They were incredibly welcoming and patient with our very rowdy kids. Went to great lengths to cook food for them. And the children loved the river which is the perfect paddling spot. On the saturday evening we had dinner in a private dining room which was really nice. Rooms very good for the price and quiet.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the side (the front is the car park the back overlooks the terrace)

A marvellous hotel in a really lovely setting. The food was delicious, sometimes sublime, and the breakfast was superb, both served in an attractive dining room. The wine list was interesting. The staff were absolutely wonderful, charming, helpful and ever so efficient. The bedrooms occupied by our party were comfortable and attractive. So what reduces my rating from excellent down to very good? Well, in one bedroom the fixed shower head over the bath was so low that only a child could fit underneath, an adult had to kneel in the bath to have a shower. And the bathrooms were carpeted - how unhygienic! I also agree with other commentators that the proprietor - so we were told he was - is aloof. I tried to arrange a little surprise with him but he was most unhelpful, in contrast to the young man in the bar who was the complete opposite when I approached him on the same matter. In many places the owner has to apologise for the lapses of his staff; here the staff apologise for the owner. But I would thoroughly recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms do vary in size but it is an old building

This hotel gets a lot of 4 or 5 stars reviews so you may ask why add another when we all know already how good it is. The setting for Glffaes is wonderfully relaxing, deep in the Welsh countryside, the birds all a twittering. The private and public rooms very comfortable. The food was exceptionally good. It was a scorching weekend so we thought we'd miss having a swimming pool. We needn't have worried - the river was there - a bit cool, but you could swim safely in it. This hotel gets 5 stars under all the usual headings but one thing stood out, and that was the attentiveness and friendly service given by all the staff. Clearly very well trained, but we thought they gave us that little bit of extra personal service. They went "the extra mile"! Well done!

Room Tip: They may not have a swimming pool but you can have a gorgeous swim in the river

We had booked a 3 night break but car problems meant we had to curtail this to 2 nights, which was a great shame. I had some very minor issues which mainly arose from the very hot weather we were having but generally the stay was wonderful. The food was plentiful and good, we had a packed lunch on one day when we went walking and the inclusion of Spanish tortilla was a welcome change from the usual fare. I fished the river (successfully!) for a couple of hours one evening then walked the 100 yards from river to bar in a state of great contentment. Finally, I have to say that the staff were all efficient and very friendly and they added to our enjoyment.

We will visit again next year

This is a wonderful place. Secluded hotel overlooking a wooded valley, with beautiful and extensive grounds. We came here to celebrate our anniversary and our room (6) had a balcony overlooking the woods. Spacious, pristine, nothing too much trouble for the staff. We had dinner here on Saturday night and it was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten, served in a warm salad of gnocchi and asparagus. Heaven on a plate. Breakfasts are lovely. There is no swimming pool, but you can wild-water swim in the River Usk in the grounds. What a find.
