It was my wife & I's 10th wedding anniversary last weekend and we had heard great things about the food at the Gliffaes Hotel, so we booked a table and let them know that it was our ten year anniversary.
From the moment we arrived we were treated beautifully, and everyone seemed to know what our occasion was. The owner herself greeted us and hoped we had a lovely evening. We had a lovely table by a warm fire (much to my wife's delight)
The food itself was simply sublime, my wife was vegetarian, which we had let the hotel know in advance. They had done a seperate menu for her so she had a good choice of vege options for starter and main. This is very rare in our experience and she usually has just one option, so no real choice!
I had the red mullet to start which was melt in the mouth goodness, with nary a bone in sight! And for a main I had the venison which was cooked to perfection.
The chef himself even put in an appearance to ask if all was ok, which was a lovely touch.
The waiting staff were attentive and very polite and we really couldn't fault the evening from start to finish.
As a special treat I can whole heartedly recommend the Gliffaes for a special meal with food and service which is out of this world
Thanks so much to all the staff at the Gliffaes for making our evening so very special :)

Came here as a treat organised by my wife for my birthday. Found river in full flood. Lovely walks along its banks and little fishing huts to shelter in. Nearby, Crickhowell makes a change for an hour outside the hotel. The only negative thing to say is that the hotel was not as warm as we would like, but the log fires could be stoked up more I'm sure. Nice dinners and breakfasts. Good service and my wife liked the soaps provided so much, she bought one to take home.

Had a beautiful room with views looking out onto the river. The food was really really god. The staff were fantastic and could not do more to help. It is the best place for people watching, we were there over New Year and I could have just sat and watched the comings and goings of the other guests and staff all day ! Its not a modern boutique hotel and doesnt try to be at all. Its just a lovely hotel with excellent food and great staff set in the most amazing grounds and that will do for me !

Room Tip: We had a river view room and it was beautiful !

We had a business trip to London and decided to drop into Wales for a few days prior. The goal was to do some hiking, enjoy good food, stay in a cozy place with lots of log fires and relax - all accomplished but also met some very nice people including the warm owners of Gliffaes and their welcoming team.

We stayed in Rooms 6 & 2 - the luxury doubles with river view - as neither was available for our full stay when we booked (the staff moved all of our stuff for us so the room change was seamless.) Both rooms had ultra comfy beds, beautiful views, good bath products (Room 6 seemed a little bigger - that bathroom was enormous and had a giant soaking tub which was much needed after long hikes. If you prefer a stand up shower in a bathtub, choose Room 2). The grounds are spectacular with immaculate gardens, enormous trees and the rushing river.

Breakfasts were big, hot and tasty - perfect fuel before a long hike. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant all three nights. Lot's of variety, local, fresh and innovative. Excellent wine list with well-priced offerings and some unusual varieties. Enjoy a cocktail before and after dinner in the bar in front of the fireplace.

We really enjoyed meeting the current generation operating the hotel James and Susie. They were so helpful (James even gave us a lift to the start of a long hike and highlighted the best the trail for us including all the landmarks and tips should we get lost in the fog and need to traipse through a few sheep fields - which we did but made it back in time for another delicious and well-earned dinner.) They have a true passion for the property and really enjoy their guests - this happily translated into a warm and welcoming experience for us.

We will definitely be back!

PS We took the train from London Paddington to Abergavenny and then a taxi to the hotel (the hotel arranged the taxi for us and he was waiting when we got off the train). We are big walkers so we really didn't feel like we needed a car. You can always call a taxi to get to trail heads or to nearby towns.
