Golly I was very surprised to read Alan C's review. I guess people have such varied expectations but it was particularly interesting to read because we were there the same weekend.. I feel therefore compelled to write a review since our thoughts are so massively to the contrary of Alan's!!

This hotel is glorious. The owners and their staff particularly make this place so special. They care passionately about every guest. We felt so well looked after despite their being very busy with a fun looking private dinner in their private dining room and a wedding celebration the following day.. Being a couple on a romantic fishing weekend getaway, I was amazed that they managed to so effortlessly make our stay feel as important as the events going on and we never felt overlooked.

The house itself is beautiful. It feels like you are a personal guest in a private house. It is this charm that makes the place so special. We loved the little details, retro Roberts radios in every room, gorgeous decor, comfy beds, STUNNING views from every window.

The food was delicious, we were so impressed. I had the lamb that night like Alan C did and can only say that I imagine it would never occur to the poor waitresses to offer a steak knife? It was so tender I could have used a butter knife!
As for stairs... There is only the most heavenly sweeping staircase that makes you feel like lady of the manor as you swish down them for supper and a delicious drink in their welcoming cosy fireside bar!

Now I mentioned fishing... Beautiful stretch of water, so peaceful and usefully for my rubbish casting, plenty of open banks so I didn't spend the usual hours detangling my line from the trees!
We didn't catch anything.... But I never do!

Hugely reccommend the Gliffaes for a romantic getaway, or just a yummy supper, or even tea on their terrace overlooking one of the best views I have ever seen from a hotel terrace. Can't wait to come back...

Room Tip: Worth stumping up extra for a river view but ask for one of their more recently refurbished rooms fo...

I just spent the night at this hotel. Absolutely amazing! Every part of the stay was spectacular - the food, the best - the room, very comfortable and cozy - the service, tops! Very relaxing and well kept up. The gardens are landscaped wonderfully, and the river, just below, is a big hit with fisherman.
The perfect get-away!

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in room 8, a double aspect room overlooking the gardens. The room was small, but very comfortable and had an en suite shower room (again small). To be fair we had been offered a choice of rooms when we booked, and so knew what to expect. Our son joined us for 2 nights for some R & R (he was on an Army course nearby). All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The position of the hotel above the river is stunning, with some lovely short walks along the river available. We had dinner "in house" and the food was lovely. The wine list was very fairly priced, and at least 6 wines were available by the glass (a welcome change). If you are staying for a special occasion ask for room 6 (we had a peek!!)

Room Tip: Room 6 is stunning, overlooking the river

We spent a couple of nights at Gliffaes in Room 4 overlooking the River Usk. We really enjoyed our couple of nights and felt that it was fair value for money. The grounds are beautiful, the staff are friendly and helpful and the food of a good standard. There are some rough edges but it is an Old Country House and I guess rough edges were part of the charm. I loved the breakfast menu with a long list of ideas for the day and I am sure we will be back to try out their Tandem and the fly fishing. In such a peaceful setting, and with a very comfortable bed our only problem was with the sound proofing. We could clearly hear snoring coming from the next room and this was a little annoying. Perhaps they could hear us snoring back. But this is a small problem and I am sure we will arrange another visit.

We booked late and had Room C1 in the cottage (large double with garden view). Lovely room and the only suggestion would be a better grade of flooring in the Bathroom and a slightly more powerful shower would be a benefit.
Wifi didn't work when we arrived and the catch on one of the lovely Wooden Sash windows was broken. Both were rectified by the time we had eaten dinner- the curtains were drawn, the bed turned down and the lights on for our return to the room....most welcome.
The view from our room was slightly spoiled by ongoing works to the sceptic tank with rubble and disturbed landscaping being compensated by a half bottle of wine in the room alongside an explanatory and apologetic note. The view beyond the immediate gardens was stunning and we could hear the river. Nice that we could park the car close to the room.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful, the river walk was lovely (would need sturdy walking shoes or Wellies if it has been wet).
The food was lovely and good sized portions albeit the description was not accurate and the Venison dish came with Beetroot which I hate and should have been stated within the otherwise detailed description. Not an extensive menu but a good selection including a vegetarian option and was well cooked and nicely presented. Breakfast was excellent and set us up for the day.
Pleasant, and relaxing overnight stay...we would visit again.

Room Tip: Look on the website...the photographs are pretty accurate. Room C1 in the cottages is a large spacio...

I visited this hotel on business. The hotel location is just beautiful, you can sit outside overlooking the river usk surrounded by peaceful countryside.
Rooms are very comfortable and clean. Lovely soft duvet and towels.
The restaurant was superb, the food was delicious and service outstanding, fairly reasonably priced too.
Breakfast was plentiful with an extensive cooked breakfast menu to select from.
I will be visiting again and hopefully not on business!
