Thoroughly fed up with the weather this winter, we booked dinner bed and breakfast at this hotel to cheer ourselves up. We were immediately impressed by the warmth of the reception, and the lovely sitting room with sofas and log fires, where we could sit with our dog. The dog also enjoyed-as did we- the extensive gardens and grounds that border the river.
Dinner consisted of the "tasting menu" (dog not allowed in dining room- fair enough), seven absolutely delicious courses, accompanied by a bottle of very good and very moderately priced wine. The service throughout was excellent.
The only aspect about which I have some reservations concerned our room. Perhaps this was because we booked through an internet deal which was undoubtedly very good value, but nevertheless the room was disappointing. It was small and dark, and overlooked the not very glamorous outbuildings. The bathroom was adequate but the double bed was on the small side, with rather an uncomfortable mattress which may have been quite old.
After not the best of nights, we were however, impressed again by a lavish and imaginative breakfast and friendly service
