“A Romantic Restaurant with Rooms”

The one thing you notice when staying at The Drawing Room is attention to detail. Everything is in its place and there is a place for everything.

Beautifully decorated, cosy, warm and very inviting. The two tiny downstairs lounges give an intimate space to enjoy an afternoon cup of tea or a pre/post dinner drink. Crackling wood fires, plenty of magazines / books to browse and cosy sofas to relax in as they appear to wrap themselves around you.

Bedrooms are spacious with luxurious bathrooms we stayed in Oliver. Plenty of wardrobe space and comfy bed beautifully dressed. No tea making facilities but Melanie is more than happy to bring a tray to your room. Although I must admit I did miss my early morning cuppa. Despite the website saying there is no Wifi I was able to connect via a BT Hotspot.

A perfect, intimate venue in wonderful countryside.

We had such a nice stay here at this restaurant with rooms, we wanted to move in!

The key things to note:
-the menu, which changes daily to avoid any repetition, is lovingly prepared by hosts Melanie and colin. In a word, delicious. Try their soufflés: wow!
-excellent customer - focused service. They can't do enough for you to make you feel at home and to make your stay a bit of sheer escapism
-warm, cosy, traditional yet modern bedrooms
-a wine list to die for
-3 x roaring log fires to read your Kindle by

These guys really know how to run a restaurant and a set of rooms. Our stay there, this easter, couldn't have been more enjoyable. And we would like to thank our hosts for running a fantastic little place that deserves to thrive!

We’re starting to pay more attention to places that describe themselves as 'Restaurants with Rooms'. We think it may be a new way to think about things after the gastropub revoluton that has pretty much swept the country (and which we see being rolled out formula-style in many of the places we visit). Rest assured, The Drawing Room...isn't. Instead what you have is two people with proper careers in cooking who obviously love what they do, and still want to share it with a lucky small band of people who make it out to rural mid Wales. If having read this review you become one of them, you won't regret it. The Drawing Room is charming, small and perfectly formed. Colin and Melanie's perfectionist tendencies cover the entire establishment, not just the kitchen (see if you can spot a weed in the garden – we challenge you). There are only fours rooms, and only six tables in the dining room; that way Colin & Melanie are able to keep 100% on top of everything, from cleaning to making up the rooms themselves, because we strongly suspect that few others would come up to their exacting standards. We stayed in ? Oliver (the red room on the website with its own roll top bath). Beautifully done, and we'll ask for it again next time we come. The two small sitting rooms either side of the front door are cozy, immaculate, full of fascinating books to dip into, and each have a fire which runs all afternoon and evening. On a chilly winters day just hole up here, and unwind with something to read. Divine. And then the food. Well, its like having the best cooks you know come to cook for you at home. Totally unpretentious, and yet brilliant at the same time. Old fashioned in terms of quantity, but anything other than that in terms of fascinating combinations and working with seasonal materials. Get here on a Friday night, go to Hay on Wye on Saturday, save up the Tasting Menu for Saturday night...then hope it snows on Sunday so you don't have to go home. Thank you both, truly wonderful, and see you again in a different season.

Spent a great weekend here. Rather like staying with some friends who love to cook, bring you drinks and choices for dinner, prepare the spare room beautifully and then stay out of the way! Melanie and Colin strike a great balance between being caring hosts and respecting your privacy. We loved it and can't wait to come back.

Me and partner had a really enjoyable weekend and the Drawing Room, we both like our fine dining and this was one of the reasons we chose to stay, we weren’t disappointed. The owners put together a tasting menu for us both nights and I couldn't fault anything put in front of me, really good wine list as well. The room we had was spotless and shower was one of those big waterfall ones that I could have easily stood under for hours! The location is about a mile or two out of Builth on a very peaceful country road. I left feeling really relaxed and will definitely be visiting again.

We had a fantastic weekend here visiting nearby friends. First of all this is sold as a restaurant with rooms. So lets talk about the restaraunt and food... My mouth waters even now when I think of the food there. The steak melted in my mouth and is the best I have ever had - anywhere!! The rest of the food was very special and unique too. No complaints there!!
The lady manager was friendly, interesting and professional.
I have spoken of the Drawing room to many people and always say how wonderful it was.
The room was fancy and tastefully done.
One small bad point was the soundproofing in the rooms was poor.

Myself and my fiancée wanted a weekend break just before Christmas so we could spend time together before having to go to our respective families. The Drawing Room seemed to fit the bill, and whilst a stretch on our budget to do two nights we thought it was probably worth it. And it definitely was. We had such a lovely time there, as others have said amazing venue, rooms and food; and genuinely lovely hosts. They made us feel extremely welcome and totally at liberty to take it easy. Couldn't recommend this place enough if you need a short break to recharge your batteries. If we hadn't found it sooner, this would have been ideal as a post-Wedding retreat.
