“Magnificent place to stay”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

Bodelwyddan castle is an hotel and museum complex although it says it's a castle it was previously a large hall and an owner in the 18th century decided to make it look like a castle which made it very realistic. It is a brilliant hotel, food magnificent, rooms huge with wonderful beds and really comfortable. Set in spectacular grounds it is a wonderful place to stay.

Room Tip: They have standard and superior rooms, we stayed in a standard room was huge

Excellent location and accomodation, good food , very friendly and helpful staff. Well situated for exploring North Wales. Good evening entertainment - for us it was a Showaddywaddy tribute band and a Madness tribute band. Slight meltdown in kitchen on Sunday morning with no hot water for tea or just hot water but you could have coffee ! Never did understand that. Free tea and coffee after evening meal but if you want a cappucinno ( which is just coffee with frothy milk ) you have to pay £2.65 - never understood that one either. Worth a visit although it does attract the 'older visitor' - no children allowed!Don't bother with the VIP entertainment package!

Bodelwyddan is beautifully situated, the staff are helpful and friendly, the rooms immaculately clean and well-furnished, the food is excellent, the facilities and activities are varied and impressive, the entertainment very good. So why does Bodelwyddan not rate a 5* review? Very simple. It is not Alvaston Hall.

When it comes to rating a Warner's resort it seems to me that it only makes sense to rate them against each other rather than against the generality of hotels. Now if you go to stay at a Warner's solely to eat and sleep this would make little sense, but IMHO, to do this would be to miss the point. Even if you do not spend all day at the hotel enjoying the activities (and we do not) certainly the evening entertainment is a crucial part of the experience. Obviously if the food/accommodation were inferior then this should be noted (and at the only coastal 'resort' I have visited the latter was but then you pay less). But given a similarity of standards in this respect what matters are the staff and especially the entertainment staff. This is not to say that those at Bodelwyddan did not try very hard, nor that they were deficient in any respect. It is just they were not as good as at Alvaston.

In part this is down to the physical arrangements. At Alvaston the restaurant/theatre are combined so one does not need to leave one's seat or hurry one's dinner to get a good seat. At Bodelwyddan there is a slight pressure to do this. But overall it comes down to the quality of the staff and those at Alvaston are simply the best. I am somewhat of a Warner's "noob" having only been to 4 resorts but from conversations I have had this opinion is not a wholly isolated one, including with people who have been to all the resorts.

In some ways I feel rather mean giving Bodelwyddan 4 stars and it goes against the Trip Advisor ethos of 'Best Hotel in XX' but as I said before in my view it makes far more sense to rank Warner's hotels against each other. Certainly I can unhesitatingly recommend Bodelwyddan but if you want the best of Warner then head for Alvaston (although this may change as they are making massive alterations there and it remains to be seen how they will work out!).

Room Tip: Ask for a patio if you like quick access to fresh air.

Bodelwyddan Castle Hotel is set next to a magnificent semi historic building which is use as an excellent council run museum well worth a visit during your stay. It has extensive well maintained grounds and gardens with superb views. The hotel buildings however are disappointing with no scenic views from the majority of guest bedrooms and none from any public rooms. The hotel as a whole has the feel of the the girls school that formerly occupied this site with no real hotel feel. If you are planning a visit be aware that all rooms will mean you have to go outside, some a considerable distance to access the public parts of the hotel. Our standard room was clean and generally well maintained although parts of the hotel are starting to look tired and in need of a good makeover.
The large restaurant had far too many tables crammed together. Our table for two was about 10-15 cm from the adjacent table. It was impossible to sit and eat a meal without feeling it was rude not to talk to the couple on the next table. The food served was fine but not good. We both ordered food that we assumed from the description was prepared in the hotels kitchens but it became increasing clear during our stay that it was mass catering food put on the plate by a chef. Not bad food but not what we expected. Try to avoid a table in the mezzanine area it looked very dark. You may have a better choice if you arrive at the hotel as soon as possible after 1pm because although you will have been allocated a table you will have an opportunity to move to a better location if you go to the restaurant at that time. Cream teas are excellent in both quality and price.
All staff are helpful and friendly and made our stay a better experience than it could have been.
We were unable to find any public room with seating that did not have piped music, even the reception was having an upgraded speaker system installed during our stay. We only wanted one public lounge with comfortable seats in which we could sit, read and talk without competing with music or entertainment. This was our first Warner holiday and we could not understand why they seem to think that all of their guests need to be entertained. We were lucky during our 4 day stay that the weather was not too wet and we were able to explore the fantastic landscape of the North Wales Coast and Snowdonia. Had it been wet I think we would have been very disappointed by our stay.
The leisure facility was good with a good range of daytime activities for those guests who wanted to take advantage of what was on offer. The pool was clean and warm but a funny shape and so caused particular problems if you wanted to swim rather than just standing in the water talking. A particular problem most obvious on our last afternoon is that the leisure facility is also a members club and a young male splashing and shouting made us leave well ahead of the time we had planned. The changing rooms were small.
If you are want a basic holiday, with a bit of a Butlin's approach then it may be for you. It was not for us and from what we have been told by other guests it is typical of what we would find at other Warner Hotels.
We booked late and with a 50% discount we feel that it was reasonable value for money
If you are happy to talk to whoever, you meet, want little privacy and want to be entertained all day then a Warner's hotel break may be for you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room as close as possible to reception, particularly if visiting during none summer months...

Arrived for a long weekend to see Ken Dodd. Initially had requested double rooms for myself and my mother. A few problems from the word "go" booking online, eventually had two adjacent singles, with patio - refund was given though. I have previously stayed at Hayling Island so knew the general theme but it was my 84 year old mothers first time. Food was good, breakfast was buffet style but there were a couple of additional options that the kitchen could provide - Eggs Benedict, kippers etc. Staff attentive. Dinner choice for all courses, carvery being the main attraction, a choice of two meats here - buffet service, for the carvery, table service for other selection (approx. 4)m starters and desserts. Table service offered for drinks. Tender your credit/debit card at reception and you can take advantage of the Charge Card - paying for everything at the hotel with it and settling the bill at the end of your stay. Took the coach trip to Llandudno and Conwy £12 per head. Good trip, just too short as we returned for 2.30 pm. Lowther Hall - the ballroom - was the evening entertainment venue. Some ballroom dancing by the guests, trivia quiz by the Entertainment Team, then Ken Dodd. After over three hours of Dodd, the chairs are awful!! On the whole, we had a good break, albeit, expensive. The Castle and it's grounds are beautiful, bedrooms clean and spacious, patio was lovely as Mother is a smoker and a wheelchair user. Disappointed in the fact that the leisure club, shop, and coffee shop were not in the main building ( weather wasn't brilliant so we had to wrap up to use these facilities). Food was plentiful and good. Main show was good, although Mother was exhausted after the 1.00 am finish and my bottom hurt after the length if time sitting on horrid chairs! Warner's cater for our mature population and, at 54, i am far too young! Mother loved it!
