“Great views, great location, great smell of chips”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights in August, with my husband and daughter. It’s a great base for Cardigan and the surrounding countryside and of course, stunning views if you have a room at the front. The staff were helpful and the food was good (although breakfast toast let the side down a bit). A word of caution – don’t use room 7 or 8 unless you live above a chip shop and like the constant aroma of deep-fat frying. We were put in there for the first night and although there was no problem with moving us for the second night, no guests should really be given those rooms. Perhaps the owners manage this on a 'one night only' basis? The second room was quite small and had mould growing on the walls, but the third room was stunning. If they were all of this standard, it would be an excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Room 21 is wonderful. Avoid 7 & 8. Room 12 OK but mouldy!

Thank you for your recent review, I would like to take this opportunity to point out just a few issues I have with your review. Firstly I would like to say that you made your booking late with us and room 7 and 8 were the only rooms left. If you recall the roof outside your window was being renewed along with the extraction system to hopefully eradicate the smell from the kitchen. In regards to the second room, I can only apologise regarding the damp, we had recently had some repairs done to the guttering and sealed any cracks in the exterior stoned walls. Since being right on the sea front the building is prone to severe weathering. In this case the housekeepers had failed to bring this issue to management’s attention. Since these repairs to the outside walls, any moisture creeping into the building should have been resolved. On your third night you were moved to room 21, which is actually one of our executive king rooms. You were not charged any extra for staying in this room, where the price difference is considerable. We are currently making full refurbishments to all our older rooms to the same finish as room 21.

In regards to the toast being a let down, what do you mean by this? I think if you are to put such a comment down then it would be an idea to elaborate on it. I don’t understand how you can complain to us in regards to room 7 during your stay which we remedied quickly, but then come onto trip advisor after your break and complain about more things. If you would have mentioned to us at the time we could have sorted this out there and then.

Thank you for your feedback and if you are to visit again next summer I hope you will be happy with our room improvements.

I have to give this place 5 stars for being so friendly, welcoming and helpful. I can't eat gluten and I'm also vegan and the chef and other staff went well out of their way to make me feel looked after. The food was amazing, the views are awesome, the staff are second to none, and the rooms are pretty cool too! Definitely recommend the bed, breakfast and evening meal deals that they do.

"Myself and wife Fiona spent a wonderful week in August 2012 at the Gwbert Hotel West of Cardigan. The location of the hotel gave stunning views of the bay, it was superbly placed for sightseeing and walks out to the Welsh Coastal Path. The quality of accomodation was suberb, the rooms were spacious, clean and with excellent en suite facilities. All of the hotel staff were friendly, helpful and extremely good at their job - whichever that particular role was. Sam and Mena were two particularly solicitous and charming members of staff as they were the two that we had the most contact with but I am sure that we could have said equally positive things about all of the staff. The food was to a very high standard something which is clearly endorsed by the numbers of evening visitors that they have in the restaurant / bistro. Booking was an absolute breeze with - once again - helpful, friendly staff, and I believe that the quality of service provided made it very much value for money. I would return at the drop of a hat and recommend it to anybody without hesitation."

Room Tip: Rooms on the Southsaide with bay windows have superb views.

We spent 3 nights here bed, breakfast and evening meal had a wonderful time. Our room we were told upon check-in had been recently decorated and we ere over the moon when we walked through the door. Staff were very helpful, they could not do enogh for us, we were even given a bucket and ice to chill a bottle of champagne that we recived as a gift from our wedding two days before.
The menu we thought had a wide a varied choice to suit all tastyes and was also very reasonably priced, as for the quality of food, exceptional.
The views from the front of the hotel are tremendous. A very idyllic spot. We will certainly be going back in the not too distant future.

Boutique-y little places in Cardigan are few and far between but the Gwbert Hotel is one of them! Our visits to West Wales rarely complete without calling in here for a drink or, preferably, a meal, and the welcome is consistently warm and the service and staff are very good. The views over Poppit Sands are stunning, and best enjoyed with a drink in your hand on the drinks terrace at the front.
The last time we ate there was with a party of people, and the food was lovely (the fillet steak was cooked v nicely) and everybody was served at the same time with nobody left waiting for their food, which is one of my bugbears when eating out in big parties. It's a great place for eating out as a couple as well, especially if you're lucky enough to get a table by the window – those views make it a lovely setting for a dinner a deux!
The prices are reasonable too. Highly recommended!
