We recently returned from our third visit to Cathy and Pat's lovely house in Stein. This has become our favourite place to stay in Skye - a house with a wonderful location and all the character you hope to find in an island home. It's also a place with its own fascinating history involving a Finnish/Russian Captain who married a local girl. The house has a lovely lived-in feel with the open fire in the sitting room to gather round in the evenings, and the wonderful bathroom with a view in the upper floor where you can lie in your bath and enjoy the view across the bay. Lots of walking and history in the Waternish peninsula and elsewhere in the north of Skye without having to travel too far, and of course the wonderful Stein Inn is your next door neighbour. What more could you want from a holiday home?
We have been holidaying in Skye for 10 years and have stayed in several holiday lets on the island. This place is easily the best location to see the North of the Isle, it is very Scottish in character, next door to Loch Bay and the Stein Inn. The restaurant at the end of the terrace is top class but has to be booked before you travel. We love it so much we have stayed there for the last 6 years and will be back again this year.
Cathy and Pat are lovely and the accommodation is always clean. The coal/ wood fireplace is great on cooler nights. The flat now has internet so you can connect if you must.
Take a trip on the local boat, they will take you anywhere you want to go and a sunset trip must not be missed. If you like the wildlife, I have seen golden and sea eagles, dolphins, eider duck, turns, lots of other seabirds in the bay. I also had a close encounter with a pine martin on the other side of the loch.
So, if you want to get away from city life but like to be next to the pub, this is the place. But don't bother in our weeks, we have already booked!
The apartment has wonderful views over Loch Bay. It has the excellent Stein Inn and Loch Bay restaurant just yards away. The apartment is clean and tidy with a cosy feel. It has an open fire and a very good range of facilities. Cathy and Pat will always provide a warm welcome. We have been coming to the Captain's house for twelve years and always look forward to our two week break in the spring.
Nick and Mo.
Stein is a wonderful place, tranquil and friendly, a timeless haven off the beaten track. This was our second holiday at The Captain's House, once again we loved it ! A fortnight of peace and quiet.......
The apartment is large therefore feels like a house, it is spacious with wonderful views across the loch and to the outer Hebrides, the bathroom views while having a soak are particularly therapeutic! It is full of character and charm, has an open fire, which was all ready to light on our arrival and, as our previous visit, there was a lovely Christmas tree to welcome us. There is everything you need for a long stay, the kitchen is particularly well equipped and spacious, I even did a bit of baking - cooking looking out onto the loch.
It is next door to the excellent Stein Inn, the oldest on Skye., so does not feel isolated and there are other craft businesses in walking distance, there is a true sends of community.
If you want state of the art, super slick contemporary, this is not for you. But if you want somewhere welcoming and friendly, retaining a little history, charm and warmth, go for it. We will definitely return
The location is excellent - As usual the house on arrival is always clean and tidy. The top floor bathroom must have one of the finest bathroom views on the whole of Skye ! The owners Cathy and Pat are only too pleased to help with any information you may require.
Would I recommend the house to a friend, well Yes and No - why No because I do not want anybody else to know about this gem.
A lovely quiet spot to spend the festive season. We've been coming to Skye for years and this our favourite place and favourite holiday home. Everything is clean, well cared for and well equipped. Despite raging gales at this time of year, it is warm and comfortable. Looking forward to coming back in the summer of 17.
We stayed at this charming, cosy house with our daughter for a summer break. It's location is exceptional, close to the oldest Inn on Skye (Stein Inn), and very close to a good restaurant. It's is also a short distance from the shore, with superb views.
The house was well-appointed, with every conceivable practical need covered, and the owners were friendly and kind. The house itself was clean and comfortable.
The shop and gallery on the ground floor were interesting, with excellent local art and crafts.
We enjoyed our week very much, and hope to go back again.
