“A Home From Home...”

You're assured of a warm and friendly welcome at the family-owned Pennyghael; now under new management and looking forward to a bright and successful future. Nothing is too much trouble; with a stunning location (otters, seals, cormorants and eagles are regular breakfast viewings) the atmosphere is warm, cosy and just what you want after a long day exploring Mull. Clean, comfortable rooms (we slept like logs), great food and plenty of it - locally sourced, freshly prepared and cooked. Hearty soups, steak and scrumptious puddings (the raspberry bread and butter pudding is a definite must have!). Did I mention the chips? Have some chips at some point, it might be a good idea to ask for a double portion. There's a great selection of whisky to sample as well. Even though the owners have only been here for a few months they have taken the time to acquaint themselves with the area and can quickly put you in touch with wildlife tours or advise you about places to visit. With a programme of refurbishment planned over the winter months, the hotel will certainly be in high demand so book early to avoid disappointment! We're looking forward to visiting again as soon as we can.

Exhausted upon arrival, our crankiness was immediately diffused by the warm and very accommodating reception of this family-owned and staffed hotel. What was only going to be a one-night's stay, turned into a 4-day home base for us while exploring the Isle of Mull and surrounding islands -- the last stretch of our 3-week self-tour through Scotland. We were promptly informed of all the great day trips to see and do, including how to best see it all. Immaculate bathrooms, relaxing hot showers, comfortable beds. With a convenient location and gorgeous view of the bay, we chose to return each night to watch the sunset from the dining room. Though the menu is limited, it changed daily offering a different cuisine to look forward to prepared by their very personable owner-chef. Don't miss out on the mussels - they were better than any found here in Boston! We will definitely be back!

Enjoy your breakfast whilst watching otters in the bay and sea eagles overhead! We turned up at this hotel drenched and on cycles to be greeted with an offer of putting our wet clothes in the tumble drier overnight. The hotel is under new management. Food was fantastic (fillet steak and baileys cheesecake highly recommended) and the owners were very helpful advising what whisky would suit our taste buds best. A great base to explore Iona and Mull.

Room Tip: ask for a view over the loch

This hotel must be in one of the most stunning locations on Mull.We were well looked after by the friendly new owners who plan to upgrade the decor during the winter months although it is comfortable enough as it is. We stayed for a week in room 5 overlooking the loch and Ben More. Evening meals were freshly cooked using available local produce where possible.Don't miss the mussels ! In the mornings whilst we enjoyed breakfast, especially cooked to order, we were entertained by an otter fishing in the loch. There are also gannets, divers, cormorants and Manx shearwaters around and we came very close to a red deer stag as it made it's way to the woods behind the hotel. There is a sea eagle's nest opposite and an eagle was seen on the loch the previous week but we were still fortunate to see them flying elsewhere. We watched three golden eagles in the glen a short distance away.It was a shame to leave such a beautiful place. We'd choose to stay at this hotel again.

We had a pleasant enough stay here but found the price of the evening meals outrageous for the quality of the food. We ate in Cafe Fish in Tobermory the night before and had one of the best food experiences ever and the cost of our meal was less than here. I had a piece of chicken and it came with mashed potato and stir fried vegetables - a terrible combination. It was plain and boring. My girlfriend had a steak. It was chewy and boring. No sauces on either of them. Sweets were expensive and supermarket standard. There was no local produce, no fresh seafood or fish. A real let down. Breakfast was good though.

Spent 3 nights here at the beginning of August. We had only found out 2 weeks before that new owners had taken over, but we needn't have worried because we had a wonderful time. The new owners were welcoming and very friendly. Our room was great,There are not many places you can lie in bed and have a view of a loch and the hills beyond. The food, both breakfasts and evening meals had good choices and were well cooked and very tasty. Couldn.t find any fault at all, except we should have stayed longer!

The Pennyghael Hotel is in a great location in the south of Mull, right on the shore of the loch and within easy driving distance of Craignure (30 mins) & Fionnphort/Iona (45 mins). The view from the hotel is wonderful - there are apparently sapphires on the beach below the hotel - and rubies on nearby Carsaig beach (but we didn't find any).

We had one of the self-catering cottages adjoining the hotel. It had 2 bedrooms, bathroom, large living room/kitchen/diner and was well equipped with FreeSat TV, washing machine, fridge, cooker, microwave and a daily supply of coffee, tea and biscuits. Everything was clean and in good order. There's central heading for colder weather. There's wifi available too in the main hotel, or if you sit in the right place in the cottage. Bedlinen & towels are provided, but you do need to bring your own soap, shampoo etc (odd, since these must be provided in the hotel & could perhaps have been offered).

We ate breakfast in the hotel - it was ok but had a slight feeling of English fry-up and economy rather than hearty Scottish fare. We had dinner one evening too - it's open to non-residents for dinner and clearly popular - though it is one of the very few restaurants in the south of the island. The menu does reflect local produce, but was fairly plain and had more of a taste of commercial catering than homecooking. Having eaten well in the north (Cafe Fish, Am Berlinn) at a similar price, this didn't really compare.

We heard the new owners just took over at the start of July and have plans for a major renovation. They're friendly, welcoming and helpful (& got us booked onto a superb boat cruise from Fionnphort out to Staffa) and I wonder if they've inherited something that perhaps had lost its way and character. At times it felt like we could be just as easily sitting in a tourist hotel in Wales, the Lakes or Blackpool rather than the Isle of Mull. The hotel has an enviable location and potential, but maybe it's happy with the space it's got.
