This is our fourth stay in this fabulous cottage. We come every summer for a textile arts course with Jan Kirkpatrick in Elphin and it makes for a great summer getaway. Ullapool is such a lovely place to stay and Jan’s courses are a fantastic way to be inspired in textile creativity. Wonderful combination. We will be back!
Great cottage with everything to hand. Our second stay and hopefully not our last! Good facilities, garden and sun lounge, very clean and less than 5 walk to sea front, shops, pubs, restaurants.
Holly cottage is a lovely, well-equipped and comfortable base for exploring north-west Scotland. Located in Ullapool, it is in the streets of the traditional, old town, a stones throw from the harbour and a short walk from the supermarket. Ullapool itself is a great place to stay, with good amenities, pubs and restaurants (do go to The Ceilidh Place). In easy driving distance are the lochs and mountains of Assynt, with fantastic walking and wildlife. The weather in late October and early November was of course changeable, but good enough for us to get out on trips each day of our stay. We had fine enough days to walk up Stac Pollaidh for the view and stroll on the sands at Sango bay, Durness. (Interesting fact: John Lennon used to go there on childhood holidays.) We recommend: stopping for lunch at the Piping School cafe, Achiltibuie, or the Pie Shop, Lochinver; evening meal at the wonderful Kylesku Hotel. We will undoubtedly be back.
There is a well-planned place for all you need in this cottage so it's very easy to relax and enjoy it. It's in a quiet street right in the centre of the village with an off-street parking space in front. If only the weather had been dry enough for us to sit out in the pretty back garden! We'll hope for better weather when we come back.
Neat and tidy cottage, minimal fuss with booking etc, largely unobtrusive owner, very handily sited for local amenities.
Stayed last week with my husband and grown up son. My husband and I had not been back to Ullapool since before our son was born and decided this year that we would go back. Booked up Holly Cottage through Trip Advisor and more than glad that we booked it. It was cozy, welcoming and spotless the minute we stepped through the door. It has a living room, a sun room, a kitchen, bathroom downstairs and a double and a twin bedroom upstairs. The living room has a very comfy settee and two comfy armchairs, a tv, dvd player and a video player with a huge selection of books, dvd's and videos in a bookcase. It also has a beautiful old fashioned tiled fireplace. The sun room has another comfy settee and another two armchairs and a nest of tables as well as folding table. This room has gorgeous views out onto the beautiful garden and patio doors that led out to the garden via a covered area with a table/bench seating. To be honest this is where my son and I spent most of our time whilst in the cottage. My son in the sun room and I sitting outside in the covered area. The kitchen is large with a cooker a microwave, a washing machine, a table and four chairs and a full sized fridge freezer which I thought was excellent. Most holiday cottages I have rented have been lucky if they had an icebox in the fridge so to have a large freezer, I thought excellent. The bathroom was narrow but the owner had made use of all the available space by putting shelving in so there was more than enough room for three peoples toiletries. The bath has a shower above it which I think great since usually you either get a bath or a shower and not both. The cupboard under the stairs has an iron and an ironing board as well as a brush, a hoover and another selection of, mostly children's videos. Upstairs the double bedroom has a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, one of which has a hairdryer in it and two side chests as well. The twin bedroom has a wardrobe, a large chest of drawers and two side chests too. Both bedrooms have windows to the front and back. Yes, the stairs to the bedrooms are on the steep side and if you have small children or are unsteady on your feet this might not be the cottage for you as is mentioned on the web site. I did find it challenging sometimes when I tried to carry too much down stairs at the one time. But if you are steady on your feet it is fine. Where the cottage is is centrally located in Ullapool with everything you would need to go to being only a few minutes walk away. Everywhere you want to go in Ullapool is honestly, at the most a few minutes walk from the cottage. You will only need to use your car if you wish to go on trips outside Ullapool. We did three day trips, One big one and two small ones and we got from near Edinburgh to Ullapool, the three day trips and back home again on one tank of fuel before we needed to fill the tank again. As always the question is would I go here again and the answers is a huge big yes. We enjoyed our week in Ullapool and in Holly Cottage so we have already decided that we plan to book Holly Cottage next year again.
Holly Cottage is comfortable, well-equipped and in a good location for all of Ullapool's amenities. Ullapool is a great base for getting out and about north and south through some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery. Altogether an excellent place to stay. Many thanks for making the cottage so welcoming.
