We cut our family holiday short, leaving two days early. The overpowering smell from both en-suite bathrooms was a major factor in our decision to leave. The smell was masked upon arrival by plug-in air fresheners and presumably toilet cleaning products, but soon became unbearable in the bathroom to the left (we did not use this shower). In addition to the smell, we were disappointed with the cleanliness of the kitchen appliances - the fridge, microwave and toaster all needed a good wipe down and sported remains of previous occupants food, as did the kitchen cupboard. We did not use the toaster, microwave or oddly placed oven and left our food bagged on the counter. A puddle of water gathered in the bottom of the very tired looking fridge - presumably due to the obvious list of the carriage. The settee, besides being damaged by a dog, was also very tired. The springs inside both double mattresses could be felt, the worse being in the bedroom to the left. There was no way of preventing water from the shower splashing onto the floor in the bathroom to the right (the screen only covered half of the shower space) and the toilet seat was ill-fitting.
We were impressed by the outside space and enjoyed watching a variety of birds feed at the feeders.
Lovely location near to town where there are shops a swimming pool friendly lovely owners and pet friendly
Loved it here. Quirky train carriage converted into 3 bedrooms, living room and kitchen. 2 double bedrooms, both en suite and 1 room with bunkbeds. Surrounded by fields, and a huge garden with barbeque area. Cosy and comfy. Loved wakening up to the sight and sounds of the bird song. Fully equipped with milk biscuits tea and coffee supplied. Close to Dumfries, Castle Douglas, Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright which has a farmers market one Sunday out the month. Would highly recommend giving this a try if you like peace and quiet and fancy staying somewhere a wee bit different.
Just got back from a few nights with the in laws at this railway carriage it is in the most beautiful place but very close to all the things you need in castle douglas you have use of a barbecue and pizza oven plus a large garden to play with the children or the dogs it was lovely sat in the room of the carriage watching the birds getting there food out of the bird feeder and watching the cows in the field next door peering over the fence watching you eat your evening meal the carriage is very quite on a night even though it is in the person's garden you are definitely not overlooked or bothered by the owners I must also state that we have stayed in various hotel's all over the world and never had a shower as powerful or as hot as the one in this holiday let it's even better than our shower at home the carriage consists of 3 bedrooms 2 have a double bed and ensuite bathroom the 3rd has bunk beds this is truly a hidden gem that I am already looking at booking again
We fell in love with the carriage from the photos on the website and were not disappointed when we arrived - in fact it was more fantastic than we had imagined. The interior is lovely, all mod cons but also with plenty of original features. It is extremely comfortable and we felt so at home. The delightful owners, Maggie and Eric, had provided us with tea, coffe, milk and shortbread as well as a 'Welcome to Scotland' bottle of wine which was a very nice touch. They were always on hand if we needed anything but were never intrusive. We felt so safe in the carriage and never overlooked even though it is in the owner's garden. Being a lover of wildlife and a keen photographer I was in my element - I spent hours watching the many different birds who visited the feeder hung just outside the living room window and was thrilled to also see rabbits, hares, deer, red kite and even Shetland pony foals in a field next to the carriage. Our favourite visitor however was Sam, the rather elderly 3 legged cat who lives with the owners and who made us feel so welcome! The carriage is surrounded by lovely views and there is a nice walk along the route of the old railway line. I would recommend the carriage to anyone (and already have!) and would really love to go back.

The owners kindly agreed to allow us early entry on arrival so that we could watch the Scottish Cup Final match from the kick-off and we were welcomed with Scotch pies for our half-time snack in addition to the more conventional wine and shortbread - a thoughtful and much appreciated gesture. The accommodation was as described and had everything we needed. The situation was convenient for Castle Douglas, Kitkcudbright, several of the 7 Stanes mountain biking areas, the RSPB site at Mersehead, golf courses and other local attractions. Our enthusiasm may be very slightly coloured both by the favourable result of that Cup Final and the glorious weather we experienced but all in all our stay in The Carriage was perfect!
