I am sure at some point this was a really nice hotel, it is in need of a complete referb, and I am sure it could be brought up to a really good standard with a good injection of cash, it can be very difficult when you have stayed in Hotels that have been kept up to date and have flat screen Tv`s (old style portable TV) and modern bathrooms not to be judgmental, if you are lucky and get a room to the front of the Hotel the views are really good we were at the back and there isn't a view as such, I would advise take it steady going down the drive to the hotel as the potholes nearly outnumber the rabbits running around, (picture a scene from water ship down) we only stayed for the one night and to be honest it was enough our room did not have a shower and I know that's not the end of the world but it is something you expect these days in a Hotel room there wasn't even a had held shower attached to the taps, the waitress we had I have to say was very pleasant, the breakfast was the only meal we had in the hotel but it was nice and hot. I don't want to sound to continuously negative but Its lack of being kept up to date really does sadly let it down and that is a shame.

Room Tip: beware of the potholes in the drive way which does go for some distance also if possible get a roo...

We were given voucher for our Anniversary for a 2 night stay!! On booking did ask if should upgrade room but was informed we were being allocated a lovely room with great view. Sounded ideal! On arrival we had to negotiate a million flies flying around in the vestibule! Not a good start! Inside there were several fly papers hanging from ceiling! yuck!! A child was on reception and we had to wait a while for service! We were taken to our room Number 5 in the basement passing an outside area with a disgusting smell! It was a tiny decrepit grubby room with a 40 watt ceiling bulb (bedside lamp didn't work at all!) with a dirty old threadbare carpet and the bathroom can only be described as grim! The suite was ancient, window catches were broken and cleanliness left a lot to be desired!! To watch television you needed binoculars as so small!! View was non existent and in fact we could only see a pile of discarded rubbish! We immediately asked to be moved to another room as had been promised a lovely room but were informed there was no availability!! We did consider just leaving at that point but knew we would have forfeited the voucher given as a gift so reluctantly decided to at least stay one night! We were too late for lunch as the chef was away but to be fair the receptionist said she could make us a cheese sandwich which turned out to be a Dairylea cheese slice!! We were booked in for Dinner as part of the deal so were more than a bit dubious! On asking for the wine list the school girl waitress looked at us with surprise and said had never heard of one! She asked an equally incredulous waiter who said to ask if we wanted red or white and produced 2 bottles to choose from. He plonked our chosen one on the table, didn't open it or pour any or produce a wine cooler!!! We managed with difficulty to order our meals and had to tell the waitress who was completely untrained and out of her depth, that my husband didn't want his starter and main course at the same time which she tried to serve!! Other diners were having similar problems. We actually began to chat to them and laugh at the madness of it all and in fact the meal was surprisingly enjoyable! The dining room could have been attractive but was drab and had seen better days! The bed linen and towels were clean and the bed was comfortable but it was difficult to read with hardly any light! Breakfast in the morning was equally amusing being served by the same 'waitress' having to continually remind her to bring coffee and toast but again the food was tasty! We enjoyed our visit to the local area and by that stage decided to ride it out! Dinner that night was served by a more able pleasant young waitress and this time we had a wine cooler! We were the only diners in the dreary dining room that evening!!! There were very few residents so not sure why our room could not have been changed! Food that evening was again very good! The chef saved the visit from being a complete disaster!! Next morning at breakfast despite being only diners the previous night our table had not been cleared and was as we had left it including empty bottle and wine cooler! The lady owner served our meal but had to return with the missing black pudding etc almost at the
point we had finished the rest of the food. She seemed in a bit of a flap! When we checked out the male owner said 'Hope
to see you again'!!! Definitely not!! Avoid this 'hotel' at all costs!!! Looking at some other reviews we feel we must have been staying in a different hotel!!!

Just returned from a 3 day trip at the Urr Valley which was a half-board deal. On entering the hotel it was like stepping back in time, quirky and quaint - exactly what we wanted, not everyone wants clinical and contempory. I must say prior to our stay we read a great many Trip Advisor reviews and we came very close to cancelling our booking. I am so pleased we chose not to! We have had a marvellous, quiet, restful break which is exactly what we wanted. Yes, the hotel is in great need of an upgrade and some TLC as it very tired, however we were very pleased on arrival to find the public areas smelt fresh and recently polished, not musty and dirty as some people had written! Our room was huge (room 4) and although it had an eclectic assortment of furniture we personally found it quirky and charming. The bed was very comfortable with a brand new mattress and the views from our windows were lovely, we had 3 really good nights sleep. The bathroom did not have a shower but that was my fault as I did not specify this when I booked. We were told the bathroom refits are all starting next week and they certainly do need it, but again, the bathroom was clean with good quality towels and complimentary toiletries. As this is a very old building there are stairs to virtually every area so not very good for wheelchair access. The food at breakfast and dinner was good and hearty and the portion sizes were HUGE! with plenty of choice. They were very short staffed whilst we were there but the staff worked very hard and were always pleasant and cheery. The grounds are beautiful and steeped in history and we had some lovely after dinner walks. I did find some of the comments on Trip Advisor were downright cruel and unnecessary. At the present time, the Urr Valley is very much in need of the planned refurbishment, but go with an open mind and if it is peace and quiet you want you will not find a better place and with the present deals they are offering you will not find anything better value for money, however, if you like 5* luxury, don't book a hotel offering budget deals then moan about it later!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have baths and others showers, make sure you specify a preference when you book.

Got a great deal on a bed, breakfast and murder mystery night. Hotel has a remote feel to its location and was a nice retreat. Had an okay room which was comfortable, but badly needs some updating. Breakfast was good.

But the reason we went was for the Grease-themed dinner and the show... Which was fantastic! Unsure of what to expect for our first murder mystery dinner, we were not disappointed! My mother and I had some excellent laughs and came away with a great story and memory! We plan to return for future shows, as it was brilliantly done. The actors and staff worked very hard to make the evening a great success! Thanks for the amazing night and a great memory!

we only came here for a meal, access to the bar was ok with the wheelchair but no chance for the restaurant, its up a flight of stairs! so we had to eat in the bar, the food was good (if you didn't order the new york chicken which is chicken wrapped in bacon with bbq sauce covered in melted cheese sounds great but was left under the grill/hot lamps far too long that the cheese had practically vulcanised and the bacon was so crispy it shattered when stabbed) the bar had no fridges at all, so anything other than coke which they seemed to have in a fridge elsewhere was warm and the choice of draft was very limited (2 lagers and 1 beer& guinness only available in cans) and on the way out had to ask permission to go through what seemed to be a teenage disco to access the wheelchair ramp out all in all, as other reviewers have said tired with a need of some TLC

Stayed on a deal for B&B with dinner. Must say this made the value good however I would not pay full price.

Here for proximity to dark sky park for astrophotography. Close enough but you need to drive further West and North.

Hotel is walkable to Castle Douglas town centre but only if dry. Would be a pain otherwise and a bit isolated. Quiet though which is nice.

Didn't like walking past all the diners up to reception and then the room. Layout strange.

Place looks tired and the number of cobwebs and dirty windows was a worry. Not good. Bedroom really basic but functional. Bathroom tired and old but functional. Old shower was ok.

Could hear other doors closing too easily but slept ok.

Dinner was just ok. Soup ok, steak pie nice and chocolate cake nice. Service for a 1/5th full room was painfully slow. Over 2 hours for 3 courses.

Young chap was friendly but please give him a hand! Not enough staff.

Breakfast was better. A bit quicker.

Overall if you need to be close to this postcode its a roll of a dice choice depending on price. I'd stay elsewhere next time.
