“A fantstic short stay in a beautiful historic castlelike hotel.”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

My partner and I returned yesterday from a superb three day stay at this ancient historic hotel. Our first impressions going up the tree lined avenue with trees hundreds of years old, was that it reminded one of approaching a stately home, and this is what this house once was.
The reception staff were very friendly and showed us to our room which was spotlessly clean, bed comfortable and we got fresh towels every day. There was also ample tea, sugar, coffee milk etc. and toiletries were replenished every day. (more than we ever got in the Hilton or Marriott)
This hotel has been recently taken over by new management and due to its age is in need of repair to the outside roof, but inside it is spotlessly clean, new carpets throughout and new bathroom suits and showers installed. Due to its age it is built on different levels with winding corridors but these add to its charm. Management told us much of its history which goes back over 400years.
The young chef was brilliant and the food was superb cooking some mouth watering meals. The waitress was very efficient but the only drawback we felt was that extra staff is needed, as it is busy at meal times and too much for one waitress.
This hotel is set in a rural area with cattle farms near by so one must be prepared for the conditions which these will create. And the most effective and hygienic way to control flying pests is with flypaper - albeit - these may look unsightly. Perhaps changing them more often would help but flypaper does the job excellently.
Overall we found it excellent value for money, the staff were friendly and helpful, food delicious and a good supply of spirits reasonably priced. There had been a party in a few days earlier who depleted the beer and they were waiting on a fresh delivery but bottled cider and lager was available.
We would definitely stay at this beautiful quaint castle like hotel again.

Room Tip: Our room no 15 was excellent with a very large bathroom and a good shower. comfortable bed, iron, k...

We visited family in area and thought we would treat ourselves to the £125 family room on offer at groupon for £59 ish
Giving us a family room and dinner and breakfast , what a deal "we thought"

We arrived late afternoon to be greeted by a vestibule full of flies and smelling very musty, shocked moving through the lounge room to reception the musty damp smell stayed with us.
Wegotshown to our room downstairs which crossed what I can only describe as the rat run from the kitchen , smelt even worse through here , sticky handrail leading down .
We then got shown into what seemed a very dated room , but clean bedding caught our eye and we agreed it would do.

It was very cold with no existent heating on, very dated and dilapidated bathroom indeed !
Not what I would call a family room, more like a hostel room.

We proceeded to get the water somewhere in between scalding hot and freezing cold in the shower before our three coarse meal , ooh couldn't wait.

We had an ok meal with the very limited choice as the "chef" wasn't on until another 3weeks, so food wasn't really what I would call fresh produce.

After a terrible sleep with doors slamming and the last of the workers having a catchup in the hallway out side our room , how kind to involve us in the whole experience ,
We eventually got of to sleep, to be woken by the rain and wind blowing our three latch window , with only one latch working in and out, I felt that cold I could of slept on the grass outside and reached a bodily temperature more comfortable,

We didn't even bother staying for breakfast as upon venturing out of our room in the morning the place stank like a pub the morning after , but its 1500 years old , and an old building some reviewers say ,,,,,

Ever heard of shak'en'vac !! This place needs skip loads of the stuff !!
And and even bigger revamp, the owner said it had a refit in 2012 , don't think so.

We even saw kitchen oven pans full of fat from the night before sat on the hallway carpets,

The manager was sat in the lounge area dealing with all her paperwork , not professional place at all !

I would highly recommend not staying at this hotel and spending the £60 ish at the premier inn hotel in dumfries , fair enough no stag heads hanging on the walls but at least the wallpaper doesn't !!

DO NOT STAY HERE , ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS !

Room Tip: Premier inn dumfries

This hotel is only for those with a sense of humour as its like the sitcom Fawlty Towers. Our room (20) on first impressions looked ok however in the night we were awoken by water dripping through the ceiling due to the heavy rainfall. This is typical of the whole hotel I'm afraid as it is in need of some serious refurbishment. However the room appeared clean with a nice four poster bed which was very comfy. The mini fridge in the bar didn't appear to be working as the bottled beer was warm. We ate in the hotel both nights as the food was actually very nice but the fly papers hanging over the tables in the dining room is really horrible for those of a queasy disposition. Tried to get some red wine with our meal on the second night and were brought rose. On pointing out the error we were told the only bottle of red was a Cabernet Sauvingnon which I do not like. Weird that a hotel only has 1 bottle of red wine. ( and I don't mean several bottles of it, just the one!!!!) first night the hotel appeared to be occupied by a staff of two who were both new that night according to the waitress/receptionist/barmaid. While we were there some guests stormed out refusing to stay when they saw their allocated room. The limited staff were all doing their best and were friendly and probably acutely embarrassed at the short comings of the place. The management really need to do something with this place as it has the potential to be a lovely hotel.

Arrived at midnight, reception closed and nobody about at all. Eventually spotted an envelope with my name and a room key inside. I found the room and was most disappointed - nothing like what the pictures shown on the Website would have you believe. Antiquated, musty and dirty with wall-paper hanging off. I didn't have breakfast as I decided not to take the risk that the housekeeping standards extended to the kitchen. I stay in hotels approx 4 nights every week - this is the worst I have ever stayed at - but at midnight there was no other option to make other arrangements locally - believe me I tried !

Room Tip: Avoid room 14
