“Well worth it !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

I have to admit that we're frequent users of 'Sun' holiday vouchers (even though it means having to buy that alleged Newspaper: fortunately our newsagent supplies it in a brown paper bag) as they offer ridiculously cheap accommodation.
We drive through Galloway fairly often on our way to and from visiting family in Ireland, so it seemed a logical place to spend a few days en route and our request for time at Auchenlarie was successful.
Both the area and the site lived up entirely to our expectations. We opted to upgrade to a large caravan, and after a very quick and efficient trip through Reception found ourselves in a comfortable, clean, modern van.
5 - 10 p.m. - discovered that the boiler wasn't working (no hot water no heating)
5 - 15 - report the problem
5 - 25 - maintenance man arrives
5 - 30 - man from office arrives, possibly independently of our problem, simply a 'Welcome: is everything OK ?' visit.
5 - 35 Man fromn office departs to sort out 'Plan B'
5 - 40 second mechanic arrives
Boiler still not working
5 - 45 Plan B. Lady from office arrives with key to another van. All then help us to move.
You can't knock tht as service !
The second van was equally spacious, clean, and almost new.
We were probably fortunate that as it was early May, and outside the school holidays, the site was about 10% full, so very quiet.
The beach was very pleasant, and the rabbits very amusing.
Our only criticism was that the Bistro Bar offered only a poor mass-market keg bitter - very sad given the number of excellent breweries that exist, That apart we'd VERY happily return

Room Tip: You could try requesting not to be too near the road

What can we say. Our first time at Auchenlarie. Holiday park lovely with all holiday homes having great sea views. Lots of rabbits so drive slow when on park grounds. We arrived early, just after 2pm. Was greeted warmly and shown into the bistro bar as our caravan wasn't quite ready but told it wouldn't be long. We enjoyed a drink overlooking the sea and met some new arrivals and had a chat.We only had to wait 20 mins and then we were told the holiday home was ready and given instructions how to get there. We were in the red zone, caravan 47, about three rows back from the A75. (We had no problems with getting to sleep, although you are aware slightly that there is a road it wasn't really that noticeable except for Monday night when the army had a big six nations exercise on and were moving lots of heavy equipment but we quite enjoyed watching that. The cars and lorries were no problem though.) We had chosen a gold 2 caravan as we wanted central heating because of the time of year. We ended up with three bedrooms so plenty of space to store our bags etc.It was beautiful and really clean (we are quite fussy) and the shower was extra large and really powerful. We also had an extra toilet and a flat screen tv in the bedroom as well. Everything was in good working order and the caravans central heating was really good, we were as warm as toast. Within 30 mins of settling in we had a visit from Carol to check if everything was ok and we were happy with our accomodation. We have never had this on any other parks we have stayed at and it made us feel very welcome. We were given a voucher for a bottle of wine which we recieved when we purchased a drink from any of the bars on site. Never had that before either. Because it was a quiet time of year the Sports bar was the place for the entertainment and there was no charge for this except if you wanted to play bingo. The staff entertained the children in the early part of the evening and then it was a quiz for us older ones and the compares then did some singing and so did some of the customers. Although the audience wasn't very big everyone was made to feel very welcome. Now it would have been very easy for the site staff not to bother with it being a quiet time of year but that was not the case. One lady had a birthday and she was bought a drink and a little boy who had his fifth birthday was presented with a gift which we thought was a nice touch. We went to the sports bar every night, its a lovely clean bar, warm, and the beer is good not watery and tasteless as in some parks ( you can tell when someone knows how to keep clean beer lines). We chatted with other people who were staying on site. Nobody had a bad word to say about their caravan, the site or the staff which we found refreshing as you nearly always get someone who likes to have a mump and a whinge. We did not use the sports facilities but had a look at them and the pool made wish I had brought my swimming things after all. We had just gone to relax and look around the area. We followed the Red Kite trail (and saw one....beautiful. The wings on this hawk are magnificent) and drove alongside Loch Ken and through the Galloway Forest Park and saw the wild goats. Stunning scenery. We spent an afternoon on Auhenlarie Beach, the most stunning little cove. Its quite steep to get down but take it slow and easy and its well worth the effort. We were all alone and did some beach combing and looked in the rock pools. Its such a beautiful place. We were there when the moon was full and the moonlit view from our terrace was so lovely. We could not fault this four day break, we wished we had booked a longer stay and look forward to returning when we can. On our way home we stopped off at Loch Arthur Organic Farm Shop and Cafe. We purchased local blue cheese and haggis and sausages made by their own butcher. Absolutely delicious.
So to finish...a big THANK YOU to all at Auchenlarie for making our trip so lovely and memorable and we hope to see you all agian soon.

We booked a cheap deal through Hoseasons and when we arrived there were a few problems which were dealt with promptly and professionally within the hour. We chose to pay extra for an upgrade to a beautiful large caravan/lodge (Y81) elevated position with unspoiled views. The accommodation was very nice and we had a relaxing 4 days.
Meals in the bar were nice and at a very reasonable cost, entertainment was low key as out of season but that's to be expected. Staff all very nice and helpful.
Nice touch was a visit from staff a few hours after check in to see if all ok and a wee voucher for a bottle of wine at the bar. Completed the customer satisfaction survey for staff to act on as people should rectify issues in person or via survey not on TripAdvisor.

This was our second trip to Auchenlarie. Stayed in a gold caravan again - very clean, tidy and had all you could wish for in a caravan! (Think the most spotless caravan I have ever stayed in-and in great condition!) View was fantastic too!
Only thing, the double bed was a bit uncomfy as was very soft but suppose that is personal preference!
Staff around the park are helpful and friendly. Facilities good, food in the Bistro Bar was good pub grub at reasonable prices! Kids entertainment good too.
All in all a great wee four day break and i'm sure we will be back to the park next year at some point!

I am really bemused (and confused) by the previous review; it is somewhat disjointed and ambiguous, and certainly should not be the first review to be read by potential visitors. Therefore -

We have just returned from a 4 night break at the site - our umteenth visit to this excellent park in a beautiful location. Although the weather was not great we still managed a pleasant time. The Gold caravan was simply 'immaculate' and could not be faulted. I'm even happier to say that the pool facility has been maintained at a high standard of cleanliness and the staff were very helpful. We spent an hour or so in the Barn bar each evening, and again the staff were as helpful and polite as possible (the 'chuckle brothers' well supported by young Robbie!)

The bistro food has improved considerably in the last few years; still 'holiday park' fayre but at a sensible price and to a standard often found in many pubs. The homemade steak pie and lasagna both worthy of merit. Hopefully, the catering team will maintain this standard.

My only criticism is with the new Wifi facility - the free service in public areas seems not to be so. Guests can sign up for wifi anywhere on site for £5/day or £10 for a longer period, although you can benefit from a 1 hour free taster session. However, according to staff, the bar areas now come under the same system and do not provide a free service. We did consider this a little short sighted, as free wifi in the bar will almost certainly increase turnover at the till.....Hopefully, by our next visit the powers that be may well find a way of providing a totally free service in these areas.

We look forward to our next visit!

Many thanks for your review. I have to say, a review like yours beats management responding to negative reviews any day! With regards to the wifi, we suffered a glitch in the complex wifi for a few days and the page you were seeing was the park wifi page. This was only temporary. The comments from the staff were incorrect, the wifi for the complex is definitely separate, so i am sorry they wrongly informed you, i will make sure all staff is informed correctly.
Thank you so much again for your lovely review, i am pleased you had a great time and we can't wait to welcome you back.

Site ok just ok a bit clerical which in my opinion i didnt like.

When reaching the pool area which doors were open I looked inside to have a member of staff scream at me from the car park area "your not allowed in there " well why was it opened. Also needed to use the toilet facilities which I was told " no chance" ( I am seven months pregnant)
Once reaching office staff not much better not interested and I personally felt we could not afford a static ( oh how wrong) so will not be back

I would have liked you to elaborate on your 'bit clerical' comment because i am unsure what you mean. Your comments regarding staff have stunned me. Staff 'screaming' at customers and comments like 'no chance' just would not come from ANY of our team!
Thank you for your review (although i am totally bamboozled by it if i'm honest)!
