I rarely criticise but am sorry to say that I found the accomodation and food at the Bruce well below the standard I would expect at a 3* Hotel.

The positives were an excellent reception and service from your Restaurant Manager. The size of the room was good but these positive features were well negated by the other aspects listed below.

1) The Room had a Ceiling Light with a modern low cosumption bulb but this had no cover and I could literally reach up and touch electric wiring - surely contravening health and safety requirements. In addition There was no bulb in the mirror light

A opened half eaten packet of biscuits remained in this refreshment tray and the furniture was exceptionally old fashioned.

Walls were very thin and unsoundproofed - the people next door might as well have been in the same room - I realise this is costly to remedy but a 3* Hotel should in the 21st century have addressed this.

2) The Restaurant Food

One Starter of Smoked Salmon and Haddock arrived with just Salmon - upon enquiry of the kitchen we were advised they had run out of the other ingredients. We should have been asked whether we wished to alter our choice or at least apologised as it was served.

The other starter of deep fried brie was overcooked so that the inside has escaped and congealed on the plate and was cold!

The Filet Mignon was cremated and the new potatoes has obviously been kept warm in the pan or in the ovem so that the skins were dry and shrivelled whilst the chips were soggy!

You may think that we should have sent the lot back and on reflection we should have - as it was we curtailed our stay!!

We arrived at the Bruce after being let down over the quality of rooms in a nearby establishment. The staff here were very welcoming, chatty and friendly. Rooms were clean, breakfasts tasty, food quality good and prices very reasonable (we ate in the bar rather than the restaurant). The lady who served us breakfast went out of her way to be helpful, serving us unlimited milky coffee, and even filled our flask before a drive north at no additional charge! If I visit Newton Stewart again I would definitely stay at the Bruce.

We recently spent a couple of nights at The Bruce where we found the hospitality to be excellent, the food plentiful and of very high quality and the accommodation to be spacious and very comfortable. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience and the hotel highly recommended.
