We had a meal here on the evening of Saturday 24/08/13, and I must say it was extremely good, my wife had the steak and whisky sauce with a pie lid and fresh locally produced veg, I settled on the rump steak with a hot pepper sauce and all the trimmings.
I asked for my steak cooked medium/rare, and it was cooked just so, the hot pepper sauce complimented the steak to perfection.
My wifes meal was, as she said, a delight, steak so tender it melted in the mouth, and vegetables that were fresh and sweet.
The size of the portions was amazing, this restaurant really does offer good value for money.

Passing briefly through Newton Stewart we found it difficult to find a nice place to eat at lunch time but we happened on the Arms. It didn't look too exciting from the front, being a typical old fashioned sort of coaching inn, but although the little bar area was deserted we were immediately welcomed by a most friendly girl. The big leather chairs were comfortable and the atmosphere was traditional, as was the whole hotel. The menu was simple, but when we ordered, it was ready quickly, and obviously cooked to order. Chicken stuffed with haggis, was my choice, and my wife went for the whole haggis wi' bashed neeps and 'taties thing. It was just a little dry, but on request the girl immediately brought a large jug of piping hot gravy, which rendered both dished extremely tasty. Reasonably priced, and quickly served it provided a perfect lunch stop and well worth by passing some of the more obvious eating places in the town. The fact that the waitress/barmaid was so welcoming even thought the place was rather sad and deserted mad3 our visit a real pleasure.

Happened upon this place as it seemed to be one of the few restarants in town open on a Monday (??) but it was a very good pub. I had the chicken curry which came with some papadum and mango chutney. The mango chutney was delicious. The curry was just the right temperature for me. My travel partner had the fish and chips and it was a generous cod portion and very well made. We were too full to try dessert.
