The Compasses Inn is based in Lower Chicksgrove, about 5 mins from Tisbury. We booked out all four rooms there (there is also a cottage) for a family evening out. They are a little off the beaten track, and ask you to arrive before 3pm or after 6pm. Slightly unfortunately, we'd booked the Friday night so by the time we arrived at 6:15 the place was heaving and consequently the place was very busy and also very noisy. A recommendation instead would be to stay Saturday night where the mood is more of a dining evening. Regardless, in every instance of the different meals we ordered (there were 8 of us), the food was delicious, beautifully prepared and served. The staff couldn't do enough for us, even though it meant fighting their way through the drinkers packed round the bar. Rooms were clean and well presented with extra little touches like KitKats with the team\coffee makers. We really enjoyed the stay and look forward to a Saturday night stay!

Another lovely weekend away at The Compasses Inn, Tisbury with great food and service as usual, and good company. We often like to visit wiith it only being 90 minutes drive from Windsor, feeling that we can get away from town life to enjoy the peacefulness of the country. The food never falls below an excellent standard, although we do have to cut back on our portions when home given the healthy quantities served. Will be back soon. Paul, Rachel and Darcie.

We stayed at this venue recently on a business trip. It had been highly recomended to us and it certainly did not disappoint.

The staff were superb, extremely friendly and could not do enough for us. The food and drink were excellent and our rooms were clean, tidy and spotless. We couldn't fault a thing.

Despite being a little off the beaten track this venue provided everything we could have asked for. The setting is superb and the village / local area are picturesque to say the very least. We didn't get the opportunity to take in much of the great outdoors. The pub had a local walks guide which had a whole host of possible day/half day hikes in the area.

The venue is superb for a quiet out of the way relaxing short break. We will definitely be back again for both work and pleasure purposes.

I booked Plum Cottage which is adjacent to the Compasses Inn as a surprise over new year for my husband. Despite having some odd requests from me in terms of discretion and having other people staying for one of the nights, the owner Alan was always really prompt and helpful on email. When we arrived, the cottage was lovely and we went for food in the pub. And what food! It was wonderful, hot, prompt and delicious with really helpful and friendly staff. However, over the evening and night, a small leak in the cottage became a deluge and we had a flooded kitchen - the weather was atrocious. The owner Alan, couldn't have been more helpful - his very nice staff organised some breakfasts to come over to us as we couldn't use our kitchen and they did everything possible to try and help us out, in what was a pretty bad situation for them, New Year's Eve's party to sort etc, etc. On the following morning, following a really stormy night, we had another two leaks. On advising the staff, Alan was again down to see us, problem solving and being very friendly and helpful. He gave us a very generous discount and throughout, the staff were so accommodating and friendly, it made me want to write a review as soon as possible. It is easy to write a good review when everything goes smoothly, but it is how you are treated when things go wrong which really give you the measure of a place and I would thoroughly recommend this pub. I know they will fix the leak in the cottage as a priority and it was completely unexpected and not their fault (what weather!) and it was a lovely, smart and well equipped little cottage which we would definitely stay in again.

Room Tip: Plum Cottage is a great little place to stay next to the pub.

Met with friends at The Compass having visited once before and remembered the good quality food. On this aspect we were not disappointed where the food had been maintained at a very high standard with plenty of choice on the menu and specials board. The staff were very welcoming.
Only negative was that the pub was rather cold even though there was a log fire burning, although not blazing.
We did not stay at the pub only met for a meal so can only comment on our visit relating to the food.

Hard to find even on a second visit but well worth the detour and deviations. The food is good but with limited choices for vegetarians. That said, the meals were very good quality, very tasty and well presented both by the chef and friendly staff. Artistic presentation provoked the 'high cuisine' comment from one of the party. The important measure is, of course, the beer, again a good selection and very well kept. A perfect rendezvous for a family gathering. £7 for the cheese board though!

Room Tip: Don't rely on your sat nav. Look at a map before you set off.

This really is one of the best pubs in the area. The food is excellent much better than usual pub grub. The pub itself is charming with wooden beams, low ceilings and a fireplace. Beer on tap good too. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Hard to beat
