“Lovely pub, great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2013

Found this pub en route back to London through recommendation from a nearby restaurant. The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend it. It was a bit hard to find but it was worth it. Very nice, quaint old pub.

We had a wonderful, spacious room above this historic pub and also enjoyed the lively bar and fine cuisine. Friendly, attentive staff. Loved everything about this place, Tisbury and other villages nearby.

We stayed for 2 nights and had a meal in the pub both evenings .The food was good and the staff were excellent. Our room was very clean and comfortable and it is a very well run operation.
The pub which is in an idyllic location, is outstanding with a very friendly, welcoming, and relaxed atmosphere - a great place to stay.

We stayed at the Inn for two nights as part of a walking holiday, and ate at the pub both nights.

The staff (as near as I can tell, mostly the owner's family) was very friendly and helpful. They set us up with reserved tables at night and fed us breakfast in the morning. When we asked for a picnic lunch for the next day, they took our order and it was ready for us at breakfast the next morning.

Both meals we had were excellent, and with a pretty good wine selection in addition to their fine beer.

They have older rooms as well as some newer larger "family" style rooms. We stayed in one of the older rooms and it was very clean and comfortable, it could have been improved with a newer mattress and as other reviewers have commented, the kitchen exhaust was a bit noisy.

Room Tip: The newer rooms are likely a bit more comfortable.

A superb pub with rooms and great food. Only four rooms plus a cottage. We have now been twice. A wonderfully run place. Very friendly and efficient staff, from front of house to the kitchen. Nothing too much trouble. We were very well looked after.
A little hard to find even with a satnav. But keep on trying! I'ts worth it.

We did not stay here but ate in the bar.
The food was very good and we both enjoyed it. Prices are on the high side for pub dining. Beer at £3.50 a pint is also a bit steep.

The bar is very well done out and certainly shows the passage of time, about 600 years or so!

We would certainly visit again.

Located down a series of narrow roads, the Compasses Inn is a small and quaint thatched Inn surrounded by lovely undulating countryside. There is ample parking. There is a small beer garden to the front. The interior, delightfully unchanged in generations, consists of a small bar area and dining tables, there is an open fireplace no doubt in use during winter. A separate dining room is in a small extension to the rear overlooking a garden. The pub is not big, but seems to a be popular choice for dining.
The bar has an extensive choice of spirits, including malts, cognacs and an armagnac, in addition to hand pulled ales. The wine list has sufficient choices including some very good wines by the glass.
The menu is not extensive, but then this not a pub that has a vast choice of microwavable meals, all dishes seem to be created personally using fresh local produce. The menu does offer enough variety in my opinion. The stylish dishes are presented in the modern manner and our choices of smoked mackerel and a duck confit salad followed by a fillet steak and belly pork were absolutely delicious.
The very polite service was excellent despite it being a busy night, they managed-just.
Our room, no 1, was very spacious, tastefully decorated and well equipped with the usual tv, radio, tea/coffee making and a sofa, sensibly placed to relax or watch tv. Our room, though above a busy bar, did not suffer unduly from noise intrusion. We had views over the surrounding countryside both through a front window and a window to the rear. The en-suite bathroom was equally spacious, with shower over the bath. Usual shampoos/soaps provided, together with nicely soft towels
There seemed to be just a handful of rooms, some above the pub and two others in an adjacent building, probably stables previously. From what other reviewers have said It would appear that room no 1 is the best in the main building.
It has to be remembered that this Inn is centuries old and like all buildings of that age it is not always possible hide and trunk wiring/piping. Modern installations and regulations dictate.
Overall, the Compasses Inn offers a comfortable and secluded base from which to explore/walk the surrounding area and, at the end of the day, excellent and convivial dining.
It is very good value and we enjoyed our stay.
One gripe, the lighting in the bar/restuarant area needs some tweeking, some tables had very bright lights above them and one light left of the fireplace was shadeless.

Room Tip: Room No 1 would seem to be a very good choice, spacious, very comfortable, views front and rear.
