We had tried several times to stay at the Beckford Arms but it was always full - a good sign - it must be really good - really popular - so when we eventually went just for lunch we were very disappointed. The menu was uninspiring - only the standard items - fish and chips, burger, steak were considered good - all starters were just OK and a roast mackerel went uneaten as having no flavour whatsoever. Granted the very pleasant and efficient staff took this off the bill. Maybe the chef was away that day ..... sorry but we won't be rushing back.

We had a wonderful 3 course roast dinner here yesterday, a couple of bottles of wine, a few gins and it came to £100 for two - worth every penny. i could hardly get the lamb on my fork it fell apart so deliciously. I phoned in the morning and the fella on the phone explained that they were fully booked for lunch but was happy for us to pitch up at 2pm and slip in if a space became available. So lovely to see a decent spot filled to bursting. It's an easy 1.5 mile walk from the station (we came from salisbury on the train, about 15 minutes ride) but too dangerous to walk in the dark - BEWARE - we neglected to call a taxi back to the station in advance and none were available. That said, a lovely young fella behind the bar (Seb, i think) volunteered to drop us back himself! The train was only £9 return for two of us and made it a bit of an adventure. We shall most certainly be back, often. A New Years resolution i reckon i can stick to.

We are not serial complainers by any stretch of the imagination, we are tolerant of most standards of service. Indeed, service we regard as outstanding we would quite easily write to the appropriate manager to express our thanks.
Regarding the Beckford Arms, we phoned for a booking for lunch, leaving it on an answer service. Upon arrival we sensed a problem when the staff huddled around a booking sheet. Two things happened that have prompted this review.
1. The manager we assumed came over to my wife and I and said bluntly we have no table for you and that he had attempted to telephone. We have checked since, no attempt was made.
2. At this precise time a family of 4 pushed by us and asked verbally for a table with no booking, they were catered for.
We recommend that if you are entertaining visiting this establishment, do not assume their telephone answering is a booking.
Over the last 20 years we have visited pubs and restaurants in the Salisbury area, this is the first time we have ever been treated in such a way. We will not be going back.

Hi SaudiSam

I am very sorry you have had this experience. However, I must say, that in no restaurant in the world is a telephone message a booking! We do try our best to get back to every single telephone message it is possible we failed in your case but we are pretty good about it. The other table of 4 you refer to did actually have a booking. I know it is annoying to turn up to a country pub and not be able to just walk in but we only have so many tables and when they are occupied we never push people off their tables to cram people in as many as possible. We want every single person to have a relaxed country pub experience. It is not usually vital to have a booking with us but it is always advisable particularly on a Sunday lunch at 1pm - it also helps us to stagger the tables so that everyone gets great service.

The smell of woodsmoke and the mellow warmth of this stone built rural pub was enticement enough on yet another wet day betwween Christmas and the New Year. A reservation had been made the day before which was just as well as the car park was full when we arrived for lunch. A rather innocuous front door does not do justice to what is to be found behind it. To the left the comfy sitting room with it's large sofas, to the right the main bar with it's open fire and busy lunchtime service. This rural pub is certainly a gem and sets the standard for others to follow, especially in a remote location.

Although there was a young front of house team, the service whether at the bar or in the restaurant was very efficient, friendly and discreetly attentive. A date specific lunch restaurant menu and two specials offered a varied and interesting choice. Service was very efficient despite what appeared to be a very full session. Detailing and food - from the smoked salmon starter to the lamb brisket was excellent.

Yes the food is not cheap but for the quality it represented very good value. It was a pity that we couldn't spend more time enjoying the comfort of this truly exemplary country pub, but we will be back.

The perfect setting for a Sunday lunch, massively disappointed by the end! The food, not great! Burnt, floured potatoes instead of fluffy and crispy. Overcooked beef, tough and tasteless with watery gravy (if you can call it gravy)! Upon clearing our plates, we were surprised they didn't question why one plate still had most of the Sunday lunch still on it...especially as it seemed like the 'manager' who cleared. Staff looked like they weren't bothered, not even smiling. Ummmm a dog in the restaurant, didn't know I was eating in a dog owner's home!!!
We feel obliged to write this review for people to read, if you want a Sunday lunch DO NOT eat here!

Dear Hayley
Firstly let me say I unreservedly apologise for your poor experience. I am personally discussing this with all the kitchen staff on last Sunday lunch. We take complaints such as yours very seriously indeed as although we rarely get them and have won lots of praise for our food we know we are only as good as the last plate of food served - and in your case we have obviously failed to live up to our normal high standards.
I am surprised by your comment about floor staff - others do say they find our waiting staff incredibly friendly offering proper professional service in a relaxed informal style. So again I will be looking into this as we have failed you.
With regards to dogs - this we cannot agree on - we are after all a country pub and particularly on a Sunday lunch there will be one or two local dogs cosying up in front of the fire. We try to usher them away from guests who find dogs annoying - again we have not succeeded in your case.
