Enjoyed afternoon tea with a good friend. We sat outside on the terrace of the main restaurant and it was delightful. We had a couple of glasses of fizz, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, slices of cake (madeira, zebra) and a selection of petit fours. We couldn't get though it all but the waiter was quite happy for us to take home a 'doggy bag'.

The sun shone, the garden was inviting and we had a super afternoon there.

had a great Sunday night spa deal, dinner was superb. knew we'd have the cheap room but, considering it's a 5 star hotel was disappointed by the general rundown appearance - lots of marks on walls. needed a good wipe down or paint. bed was very comfy and a good size. shower was good. spa also has some general maintenance issues. lights in the stairs coming out of casing and rusting. rusting soap dispenser, tiles missing. needs some attention before it calls itself 5 star (or even 4!).

A friend and I visited as a birthday treat (as it happened both our birthdays fell on the same weekend). The hotel staff were universally helpful, friendly and professional - even the ones that seemed young and slightly nervous! Our meal in the hotel restaurant was exceptionally good - and I've been to a lot of hotels all over Europe so I was impressed. I would say the cooked breakfast was better than the buffet, which although good, was a little bit restricted with only fruit salad, cereals & croissants but of a perfectly good standard nonetheless. I would however comment that the breakfast room was cleared promptly at 10am which in a spa hotel seemed a little early - especially as one would like to take the time to relax a bit more and maybe come down later to breakfast, especially on a Sunday!
We had one of the spa rooms and had a chance to look at a couple of the rooms in the manor itself - personally we preferred the spa room for space and immediate access to the spa but if you're looking for cosy/olde worlde you'd probably prefer the manor house. Our room was gorgeous with an amazing balcony leading down steps to the pool and spa, a large beautiful bathroom and very spacious which was great for two friends sharing. We were so lucky to get amazing weather but even if this hadn't been the case it still would have been wonderful.
Cuckfield is a village but still manages to provide a number of nice cafes/restaurants, and boutique type shops and we found it more than adequate for a weekend stay. We had an exceptionally good meal at the Spice Village (Indian restaurant) - a few minutes walk from the hotel.
Looking forward to going back again - what excuse I'll have I don't know yet! Out of the three hotels in this group I think Ockenden comes up favourite for me.

this place can be so beautiful ! working in this industry i understand how hard maintaining a manor can be but it is no excuse to hire a lazy gardener who only makes the main part of the garden look pretty. As you walk out to explore, the grass was a little over grown, nettles, unwatered plants -( thank god i had a bottle of water to water it a little) ... the benches were gorgeous and it really has so much potential. When looking at the building, some of the wooden- painted white- windows were very severely chipped that you could see a large chunk of wood. the setting of the restaurant, once again was very pretty, had a fair amount of clientelle for a Monday, the food was well done yet not as extravagant as you'd expect a fine dining restaurant to be. Overall was a pleasant visit, just a case of attention to detail.
p.s ALWAYS pour wine for the lady before the mister.

Thank you for your comments. We are currently in the process of having new windows built. This started in April. However during the busy summer months we decided that we would not want to inconvenience our guests with having workman & scaffolding about the hotel so they will be returning in late September to continue the program. We only maintain the gardens immediately around the hotel and spa to a high standard. The terrace areas further way are deliberately not as highly manicured and are more natural. The pots and containers are currently being watered daily with this hot weather. I have passed your comment regarding wine pouring to our restaurant manager and we would normally do this unless the lady has ordered the wine.

Disappointed that we did not get a room in the Manor.I booked a room for two nights plus private dining for eight people. We were "upgraded " to a Spa room-not our scene at all and the room was very dusty on light bulbs and pictures. One light bulb not working in bathroom. Room safe non functioning and never put right despite reporting to reception. If you want to gaze at a picture from your bed I think they could have chosen one better than the back view of two cows and their udders!Food was fabulous except for breakfast the second morning-overcooked ?preheated sausage inedible. My wife wore a long evening dress and shoes so had to use car from Spa to main house as the gravel would have ruined her shoes. Our room was not made up when we returned the first day at lunchtime. We expected better. On communicating to the owner via email no apology was given and the excuse given for the overcooked sausage was that the Michelin star chef Stephen Crane said that it took 20 to 25 minutes to cook from fresh!????? so that they cooked them continually throughout breakfast-NOT good enough.

Room Tip: Take a duster!

I am sorry you did not appreciate the complimentary upgrade to one of our Junior Spa Suites. Unfortunately the light in the bathroom ceiling could not be replaced as the transformer had failed and this was replaced by the electrician on the Monday. In regards to your comments about the artwork, taste is subjective. Having checked the room safe after receiving your letter we have found it to be working.
As we tried to explain when you complained in your letter that the full English breakfast took 20 to 25 minutes to arrive from ordering the sausages take time to cook and we couldn’t possibly cook and service a full English breakfast in 6 minutes as you suggested.

The addition of a very good spa to this country hotel, combined with excellent food and very comfortable accommodation make it well worthwhile staying for a night or two. The difference between the old fashioned splendour of the manor house and the ultra modern design of the spa take a bit of getting used to, but ultimately the spa facilities are very good indeed and make for a very enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Room Tip: It depends whether you prefer quaint/olde worlde - in which case stay in the main hotel, or ultra mo...

Stopped here for an afternoon tea in June. Had heard great things about this place but we felt a little let down. The hotel is quite pretty but not at all impressive. The reception staff were very helpful and showed us to the drawing room which is really lovely but large hedges and shrubs prevent you from enjoying a good view of the garden so it feels a little dark. Our waited didn't seen to speak very good english so ordering was a struggle and we wondered what would turn up! Luckily, we got what we ordered and it was quite nice but not in the league of afternoon tea's at nearby hotels. Overall this was an 'ok' afternoon tea but we will not be returning.
