“Hmmmmm, nice but could be better”

There is no doubt that this is a lovely hotel in a great setting, but my wife and I were left feeling a bit ripped off. The hotel is part of a group owned by Martin Miller - and don't you know it - his name, his products, his writings, his photos are emblazoned all over the place! And it's pretty clear he wants your money! Having said that, it's a really interesting hotel, full of antiques and curios, comfortable, if a bit worn as you'd expect. The service was ok/friendly, the food good but far too expensive. Overall, as I have said, could be better (and cheaper!)

Dear Guest,

Were glad you enjoyed your stay with us at The Anchor, myself and my staff do endevour to keep all of our customers happy. Im sorry you feel my fathers name was too evident on the hotel however as our concept is Millers antiques we do have plenty of the price guides always around for customers to browse, however it has never been our intention to exploit this as we only have his one book for sale, his mug and his gin, as there being almost no memorabilia for sale in the area, guests do like to take a reminder of the place with them. Im sorry you feel our food maybe overpriced however we do use completely fresh locally sourced produce, however Im more than happy to look further into this.

I love this hotel! We stayed for two nights in a garden view room which was very comfortable. The free G&T on arrival was great, we sat outside in the sun looking out to sea and you could feel all the stress leave you. All the staff are a real credit to the Hotel and make you feel at home. Porlock Weir is a very special place and we will be back very soon!

The Millers at the Anchor surpassed expectation
We had 2 ,mid week, nights in July in a huge harbour view room, with a big 4-poster bed. The hotel was chock full of books and antiquities, very original atmosphere. Homemade cake [ the coffee cake was superb] and tea on arrival followed by a bottle of Provencal rose wine at a most reasonable price were readily procured by the very agreeable staff. Our Labrador was very at home sitting on the hotel's quay front terrace overlooking the boats or made welcome in the room. I would recommend this hotel highly . Excellent very generous breakfast with homemade fruit salad and a wide choice of cooked options. Be prepared though , the sea shore at Porlock is made of large pebbles not so easy for walking on.

Room Tip: choose room 1a or 2 , large harbour front rooms, worth paying the extra for.

Loved this hotel. Unbelievable setting right in the harbour - next to the pub (which for us was an added bonus as there was a cider festival on with live music and the weather was fabulous).
Great food and lovely view from the harbour room. Highly recommended.

Fabulous position overlooking Porlock weir. Spent a couple of nights here, had room no 6 with a harbour view, great views to wake up to. Packed to the rafters with books antiques and eccentric quirky touches that make you smile. Big sofas, opulent fabrics, pictures and curiosities galore. In fact we visited the lovely Dunster castle which is nearby and it looked quite bare in comparison to Millers :-)
Ren luxury toiletries and fluffy white towels are provided in the bathroom and a proper hairdryer (not the ones attached to the bathroom wall)
If you are looking for a romantic setting and something unusual, relaxing surroundings, helpful friendly staff, superb breakfasts, then you will love it here. We will be back soon.

Room Tip: Book a room with a harbour view

Location was excellent for a week-end trip. The view from room, 12 is in the front of hotel overlooking the small harbour and sea. Hotel manager and staff are very friendly. Millers rooms are full of books, antiques, sofas, clutter in a good way.The location is exquisite and within a few minutes from the stony, superb beach. It is a delight to spend the end of the week in such a unique place.

We had not heard of Millers and came across it quite by chance. Situated close to the beach with fabulous views we had a relaxing coffee watching the clear blue sky, and swallows under the eaves. That's when we weren't looking at all the antiques and wacky curiosities with which this place is packed. Even the loos are a work of art, well more like a study with plenty of books to peruse! What an experience, don't miss it!
