What a treat was in store for the unsuspecting customer! Beautifully restored Victorian hotel with an amazing menu. We had the 5 course seafood taster menu and bought the accompanying wine package as an add-on. Just fantastic, from start to finish. We were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine, guided through each course with the greatest of care, and thoroughly enjoyed each and every delightful course. From the home-cured gravadlax with a stunning citrus salad, complemented perfectly with the citrusy NZ wine, to a perfect frito misto style squid dish, followed by the richest and smoothest smoked mackerel pate I have ever tasted. (No, brandyandginger, absolutely nothing like the store bought kind.) The plaice was delicious, the wines just kept getting better, and at least we agree that the creme brulee was to die for. We thought that all the flavours were delicate, as befitting their ingredients. (Perhaps it was your taste buds that had the night off??) It doesn't get much nearer to perfection than this. The staff were only too pleased to substitute the pudding wine, which I knew would not be to my taste, for a much more suitable one. A perfect evening, terrific food, and excellent service. What more could one ask for? We'll be going back soon.
