“Nice staff but dated.”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We had a twin room towards the back of the hotel so didn't get a nice view, try to ask for a front room. The decor is dated but the room was clean. The shower is large but has too small a shower head to give a good shower. The television was very small and only offered 3 channels one of which showed news for the London area. Plenty of tea and coffee on the hospitality tray and fresh milk is available you only need to ask. Breakfast was fine and the staff were very helpful. Gairloch has lots of visitors and hotel rooms are at a premium, so the hotel was busy but the guests quiet, which was a bonus. The hotel lacks atmosphere as it has no manned bar or evening dining but the Old Inn is not too far away. Contact the hotel directly for a cheaper rate. We were told we had paid a higher rate because we used booking.com. I tried the hotel website but it wasn't available so try phoning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the gardens.

We got a pretty ugly room in an extension to the main building. Old premises, not very well maintained (old stuff is stored behind tissue panels in the main living areas). You don't get much of a sea view from this hotel. No restaurant.

Room Tip: Go to Ullapool instead.

The Highland Lodge hotel is set in a quiet and beautiful location. The room that I had was clean, and had a good sized en-suite shower room. I had booked a single room, as I was away on business, and was rather surprised to find myself in a large double bedded room with two bunk beds to use as a single room. Breakfast was in the form of a self service buffet, and the food was adequate, but it was a shame that there was no fish option available, and the fresh fruit on offer had seen better days. There were some things that could have been better, in that no face flannel was provided, and the TV was old with a very limited selection of channels. There were no comfortable chairs in the room, but a guest lounge was available. No Wi-Fi was available in the room that I was allocated, which was a drawback as I was on business and it would have been helpful. There was also a potential problem with ventilation in the room, had the weather been warmer. The room had large opening twin doors to the outside, but no windows as such. On a warm night, unless you left the doors open all night, there would be no way of getting any fresh air.

Good location but slightly disappointing stay. Single room was OK and bathroom was fine - all nice and clean. TV didn't work or at least very few channels. No evening meals - only down the road and that was OK but nothing special (The Old Inn). Honesty Bar which was a nice touch but whole place totally lacking in atmosphere. Breakfast was fine. Good for 1 night.

Superb location, clean and a fabulous view from our room and the dining area but "sad" and lacking atmosphere. At breakfast no fish on the menu and the waiting staff were surprised when we asked if there was any available, strange for a fishing village. Eating at the sister hotel in the evening was not a problem for us but I guess would be unpleasant in the rain. The 10% reduction on an evening meal offered by the Highland Lodge at the sister hotel was misleading as it is only off food, not a meal as stated. Dining out invariably involves drinks alcoholic or otherwise this should perhaps be made clear as I can not believe we are the only customers to challenge the discount on being given the bill. The "honesty bar" was unusual but a lovely touch and was not abused by any that we saw. Most staff were courteous and chatty, excellent manager at sister hotel.

this was an excellent hotel to stay in for these straitened times. Clean and comfortable with a great atmosphere, created by a real Scot and his witty German wife who were a pleasure to talk to!!!! Although they only offer bed and breakfast in this particular building, they own The Old Inn a very short walk away which does both lunch and dinner. This keeps costs down with very little inconvenience to guests. Our en suite was perhaps a little small and would have been better as a shower room but many people prefer a bath so a bath has to be installed!!!!! We were delighted with what was provided and felt we had excellent value for our money. PS the bed was very clean and comfortable-----King size for those to whom such thing matter!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for room facing harbour.
