“Excellent boat trip with knowledgable skipper/guide”

Gairloch Marine Life Centre & Cruises
Reviewed April 28, 2014

There were four of us on this trip in April 2014. Ian the skipper was extremely good, going out of his way to ensure that everyone on board had an enjoyable trip. Ensuring that all wild life seen was explained in detail and in an interesting and educational manner.
This trip represents excellent value for money, will definitely use this attraction again. Thoroughly recommended.

If it swims in the sea or flies above it, Ian will see it, he will then explain all there is to say about what you are looking at. Sailed with him twice in a fortnight, wonderfull sights of wildlife, cost is also reasonable. We visit Gairloch frequently and always sail with Ian and never been disappointed. No point in listing what we saw (we saw a lot) as it is wildlife you are going to see and there the predictability ends, We will be sailing again next year with him.

We visited - and cruised with Ian last year - and booked this trip before we even left North Yorkshire. As a local - and a marine biologist - Ian really know his stuff - and the best places to find it! We checked the board to see what sights had met previous trips - and were excited by the prospect of a basking shark!

However, despite great weather and a falling tide - the sea creatures were shy and kept out of view - apart from some seals who were happy to pose for our cameras. As Ian stressed from the outset - these are WILD animals and so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

However, on our way back to shore we had a wonderful high flying display from 2 white tailed sea eagles - a parent and a young bird.

For those interested in geology - there are magnificent views of Skye, Ronay, Raasay and of course the mainland (weather permitting). For those who simply like peace and tranquility - a 2 hour sail can deliver on that score aswell.

Binoculars and a camera are a must. Take a coat as it can get chilly even on a sunny day - and sun cream in nice weather as the reflection from the water can give you surprise sunburn!

Would suit all ages - some steps onto the boat, and access to the pontoon is via a long ramp

First day in Gairloch and the sun was shining so we decided to take a boat trip. We definitely made a great choice, Starquest skippered by Ian is a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours. A marine biologist his knowledge of everything local is immense and we learnt a great deal. Not just the sea life but he knows his birds and local geography as well. Also very flexible and goes to where he thinks you have the best chance of seeing something. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone of any age. It was so good we went back and did it again Friday and when we are back in the area will definitely be doing it again. Thanks Ian.

We (mum, dad and 5 year old daughter) always enjoy going on Starquest with Ian. His knowledge of the local wildlife hotspots both on and off the water, coupled with his historical knowledge of the area are second to none. Plus the fact that he is a really nice fella and a good craic. I must confess, we haven't tried the other cruise providers at Gairloch, but why would we when Ian is so good at what he does. We've been out a good few time snow and have seen different stuff each time. The seals and porpoise tend to be ever present, a keen eye on the water will provide you with a great experience. To be honest though, I'm always looking to the skies or in the nooks and crannies on the shore for the birdlife. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
