“Met our needs”
Reviewed July 31, 2014 via mobile

On arrival we were upgraded to the family room to accommodate our 2 dogs (as it wasn't booked) at no extra cost. Friendly greeting by the owner and her little pooch. First impressions left us pleased.

The room was a little out dated in relation to decor, and the en suite has no window however the room and en suite met our needs and was more than comfortable for the time we were in it. The room was however extremely hot however the heating was not on and our window was open.

The food was fantastic along with the service. Loved the fact we could choose to have the dogs with us when we ate or we could choose to leave them in the room.

We are trying another b and b when we return later in the year however would stay again at the hope and anchor.

Room was far better than I had expected though probably a touch on the small side for a long stay.
Breakfast was very good, with order taken previous night and cooked specifically for you. The kippers are worth having. Better than any I have tried before. The hotel prides itself on fresh local food so probably the kippers are smoked in nearby Craster.
Food in the restaurant was good but I think they had been optimistic and overstretched the kitchen as service was slow.
No car parking but plenty of space on the road outside.

This is not a hotel but a pub with rooms. There was no reception and we had to wait a long time to check-in whilst customers were served drinks at the bar where loud music was playing continuously. Our room was directly above the bar and, had we stayed, the loud, thumping music would have made it impossible for us to sleep. When we asked for a quieter room (there wasn't one), the manager couldn't be bothered to come and speak to us and later didn't even reply to a polite letter we wrote asking for a refund for the room we didn't use.

Having read some recent reviews had me wondering. Staff were perfectly fine and always polite. Room itself was good (seagull) although I did not appreciate people in the beer garden being able to look directly in and the piped music downstairs thudded away. Breakfast was ok. Free Wi-Fi was a plus.

Room Tip: Only room I know is Seagull, People can see in from beer garden and piped music from downstairs can...

We booked by phone for a family lunch for mid day and informed them we would arrive early for drinks before lunch. Arrived around 11:30. Door was open and when we entered the premises cleaning was in progress. Very friendly greeting from the dog but the welcome stopped there!!!. The lady behind the bar looked at us in surprise and didn't speak. We asked if they were open and she said no. No further information forthcoming. We said we had booked a table for mid day and were informed that they were still cleaning up after breakfast and that the table was not ready. We then had to ask what time they opened at. We were informed in a less than friendly manner that they opened at 12. No more conversation. We had 2 elderly people in our party and were not even offered a place to sit while they prepared the table. We said we would leave and come back but headed for the Red Lion where we had wonderful hospitality and a lovely meal. Will never return to the Hope and Anchor.

We were greeted with long faces and we're told to come back after 2pm. Our room (Curlew) stank of chip fat and was boiling! The staff are openly unhappy about their workplace.
A bad experience which we will not repeat.

We were disappointed with this inn, contrary to the reviews. The rooms were poorly equipped and hot, with the usual heavy bedding in spite of the heat. Nowhere whatsoever to put luggage or personal effects except the windowsill. Nowhere to put anything at all in the bath. The room faced the sun during the day and was hot and stifling. The inn had no portable fan available to get air circulating. The bedding was winter weight and no alternative was available. We asked for empty duvet covers to no response. There is no phone in the room, so such requests involved a trip downstairs. The staff was a mixed bag - the woman in charge of the inn was not helpful, but the restaurant manager seemed to try to compensate for her. I was tempted to give this a poor rating, but if it hadn't been hot it would have been tolerable.
