“To be honest, disappointing Sunday dinner”
Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

Had read the reviews and visited for a drink as we are staying in Alnmouth just around the corner so had high hopes of a good meal. Northumbrian Roast Beef at £7.95 and Beef pie similar price sounded excellent value for money and arrived very quickly....rather too quickly in fact. The roast beef was more braised than roasted and more of a shin cut than a roasted joint, the Yorkshire pudding was overlooked and far too crisp and hard to be freshly cooked. We ate at 6.30 PM and the Sunday menu was offered all day. It is a problem for pubs to 'keep food hot and cooked' for hours on end. Answer, just serve traditional lunches earlier in the day and revert to evening menu. We were generally a bit disappointed, it may have been better at 1 PM, roast potato ( just 1!) and broccoli were ok. It filled a gap, that's all. pie was also ok, meat rather dry and pastry a bit chewy. won't return for food.

We popped in here for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food i can only describe as amazing. For the trio of meat lunch we had pork, lamb & beef and i have never had meat like it. It just fell apart and was totally delicious. The veg was lightly cooked, just how i like it and the mash was lovely and peppery. The only problem was that there was just too much. We were told afterwards that we could have had a half portion which meant i could have eaten the massive yorkshire pud! All in all a fabulous place for food and we will definitely be returning!

We stayed at the Red Lion last weekend for 2 nights as part of a lads golf tour. The inn is located on the main street in Alnmouth opposite the village church and post office and is no more than a five minute walk to the beach.
The accommodation was basic but comfortable and clean and also benefitted from room service who remade the room and freshened the towels each morning. Our room (room 3) shared its very nice bathroom with room 4, however we did have a sink in the room and as room 4 was unoccupied this didn't cause a problem. I can't fault the size or the quality of the breakfast which was plentiful and nicely presented.

We ate at the pub on the Friday night and on the experience was mostly positive. If anything, I would say that some of the dishes were needlessly fussy and my friends who opted for these choices were the ones left disapointed whereas the ones who opted for the more standard pub grub were the ones left more satisfied.

The service both during the evening and the breakfast serices needs some work too; the staff were very friendly and polite but in needed to pick up the pace in terms of responding to requests; more bread to go with the paté was delivered but about 10 mins too late. Extra toast to accompany breakkfast also came as we were scraping our plates. On the whole though a very enjoyable stay in a very nice pub.

Lovely little pub just opposite the post office, we popped in on the off chance we might get a Sunday lunch ( having tried the other nearby places which were all very expensive and had over an hours wait) we easily found plenty of seats even on an exceptionally busy day in the beer garden, and paid a reasonable price for a lovely roast which arrived at our table in minutes. Child and dog friendly, we will return to this gem of a traditional inn.

Our stay at the Red Lion reminded me why I am not a fan of pub accommodation. It is very difficult to do both well and one usually suffers over the other. In the Red Lion's case, it was the B&B side of the business that didn't meet our expectations or the £90 a night price tag. To be fair the room was ok and thankfully not directly opposite the kitchen which other rooms where. Disappointingly during our 2 night stay the room was barely cleaned and fresh towels definitely not provided. This should be a given at this price level. Probably the biggest disappointment was with breakfast. One employee served everybody staying at the B&B. Therefore the service although very polite was terribly slow. Not what you want when you have a packed day ahead. We never ate at the pub simply because the wait for a drink was long enough to put us off risking the wait for a meal. Maybe if the management at the Red Lion played a more visible role things would be a little different. Accommodation in Alnmouth is limited and my advice would be to choose carefully.

Room Tip: Try avoid rooms 1 & 2 on the same floor as the kitchen - first floor.

We stayed here as part of the Newcastle to Edinburgh bike ride. Really friendly and welcoming staff. Secure place to leave the bikes and nothing was too much trouble. Really nice rooms with great shower which was appreciated after a long day on the bikes. TV, teas and coffees so we felt well provided for and great food in the restaurant. Location couldn't be better right on Alnmouth high street. Lovely beer garden with Estuary views. All in all a lovely place to stay and pretty good value too1
