“A Cock And Bull Story ... home...”
Review of Shandy Hall

Shandy Hall
Ranked #3 of 4 things to do in Coxwold
Attraction details
Reviewed June 3, 2011

This was home to Laurence Sterne, an amazing figure in several ways. Today, he is best known for his 'Tristram Shandy' or to give it the full title 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman'; this is said to be the first-ever postmodern novel. Certainly, the narrative is not linear.

It is superb to be able to see what the charitable trust have done in conserving this building; the volunteers in the few rooms open to the public are so knowledgeable and the gardens well worth seeing as well. If you do want an introduction to the 'story', you could view 'A Cock And Bull Story', featuring Rob Bryden and Steve Coogan... oh and Gillian Anderson as the Widow Wadman! This is the movie they said couldn't be made. Personally, and I am no film critic, I think it does real justice to the novel - the film even has Stephen Fry in a cameo role shot in Shandy Hall.

Do bear in mind that the property is only open twice a week - this requires planning!
