My husband and I were travelling from south west Cumbria to Butlins at Skegness on our motorbikes to attend the Motorcycle News Live show. We decided to add an extra day to our trip to cut down on the travelling time;as it's not too warm yet and we've become fairweather bikers in our old age! As neither of us have done much of the east coast it would also give us chance to visit Whitby and Scarborough en route. I found the Captain Cook Inn on Expedia and it seemed to be just what we wanted. When we arrived the first reaction was not good! It looked a bit shabby and run down. However the friendliness of the staff and the locals in the bar quickly won us round and we learned that it was under new management and currently being refurbished. We chose freshly caught haddock from the menu, which was lightly battered to perfection and served with proper chunky homemade chips and mushy peas. To my husband's delight they were having a beer festival, so after our meal we proceeded to sample several of their splendid collection of real ales. The landlord was a mine of information about the local area and took time to show us several of the many pictures which hang on the bar walls, forming a pictorial history of the area and the building which was orginally a hotel for the railway that ran through the village. We had a comfortable night and will return in the future. They are dog friendly
too, always a bonus for us.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly refurbished rooms if you're picky

Stayed here for one night whist walking part of the Cleveland Way. Rooms are basic and tired but this is made up for by the friendliness of the staff. They provide a slip with the following information on it :- Front Door and Your Room Access Codes, Wi Fi Code, Landline and Mobile number for the Landlord. Can recommend the large steak pie with chips!

We came here for our Honeymoon weekend, my husband has been coming here for years with his family.
Yes the appearance is tired but the welcome you get is fantastic, the staff are lovely and friendly.
We had breakfast and evening meals here, the food was delicious.
The bedroom was newly decorated, we had an en-suite bathroom which was new, the room was clean and warm, couldnt ask for anything more.
Loved it and cant wait to come back.

I've never stayed overnight in the inn but my family stay in Staithes and spend many an evening here, within the bar area.
When we have been children have been welcomed, the owner and staff are wonderful. We have been here when people have performed such as the Fisherman's choir. It is so homey and lovely. I always feel very welcomed.
They also brew their own ale here, well worth a try.
I just really love it.
The village itself is wonderful and this inn is a meeting place for many.

We loved it and would go again. Loads of hot water and a comfy bed. Great breakfast. Owners/staff friendly, live music too. What more could you ask for. A real down to earth place to relax. Its ideal for visiting Whitby, Robinhoods Bay, Runswick Bay, etc. Staithes is a unique little place well worth a visit.

The Captain Cook doesn't look much from the outside, but step inside for a good traditional pub serving good freshly made food and great ales. We visited during the beer festival and my partner delighted in the choice of 40 beers, whilst we both delighted in the proper hand made chips. Food was tasty, well-prepared and very reasonably priced. Staff were very helpful and friendly and the pub had a good atmosphere as a local, but welcoming to visitors. Not the smartest place in town, but probably the best value.

We booked last minute and knew from reviews that it was basic, as was reflected in the £56 charge, however we were bitterly disappointed when we arrived and saw the state of the bedroom,it is the worst i have ever seen let alone stayed in.On arrival the room was freezing cold and we were informed that the portable heater in the rooom would be better switched on,the central heating was switched off in the room, and although there were tea and coffee available , there was no tv or radio and a less than basic room. The toilet seat was not only loose and several sizes too small for the toilet, but actually disentegrating. On a lighter note the lady we dealt with was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very good but overall very, very disappointing
