The new lunch menu is superb...and what excellent value. All three of us tried new dishes....all agreed...yummie... two courses perfectly satisfying. The service was professional to the finger tips. Fires burning... wines delicious...candles lit as the light faded...what could be better in the run up to Christmas than this... cosy comfort... with heartwarming food. It really doesn't come much better than this...so were this to be my last day on the planet I would be more than happy..although I hope not!!! Too many more good meals and bottles to be had!!!!

We will be recommending all Millgate House guests to venture out through mud and flood to enjoy the Blue Lion...

Wonderful...

We went as a group of 4 people this month for a meal and to stay over. Picturesque village if very quiet - only the pub and houses (no village shops) but great for walkers. Service was none descript on arrival, as the lady behind the bar saw us come in, didnt acknowledge us, then walked around to reception, without saying hello or beconing us to follow her. The booking-in formalities were taken care of ok, then we were given our key and directed to the rooms (we were not offered to be shown outside to where they were). We stayed in the larger rooms in the courtyard outside. The rooms were large, warm and airy with all the mod cons. The bathroom was large with plenty of White Company toiletries.
We had booked a meal in the bar which is lovely and atmospheric - stone flagged floors, open fire, old furniture, etc. The scottish gentleman taking our order was pleasant and helped with descriptions. However, the waiter looking after us thereon was surly, miserable, and didnt crack a smile all night. When my husband put a log on the fire because it was down to its last embers, the waiter removed it! He also ordered us out of the bar at night as he wanted to close it down, even though we were residents.
The food was quite good - I wouldnt say average, but wouldnt say memorable either, although there was a wide selection of choice, and great wine - we had a fantastic bottle of sauvignon blanc called Fernlands 2012.
At breakfast we were served again by the scottish gentleman and a lovely younger man who were both efficient and friendly, nothing was a bother.
Shame our visit was spoilt somewhat by the non-existant welcome and the miserable Italian waiter. If the management are reading this I'd strongly suggest that better customer communication skills are required and need to be more consistant.

I have often enjoyed meals at the Blue Lion - in fact I have NEVER been disappointed. The cooking is gorgeous; the service impeccable and the ambience relaxing. You can't fault the place except perhaps the price of a glass of wine at over £8 that seems steep!

But don't let that detract from the excellence of the establishment and the people who make it a success.

There is a good atmosphere about this 18th century inn which shows a real awareness of customer needs -eg papers, imaginative food and very comfortable bedrooms. A very wide choice of wines as well as Black Sheep and Theakstons Best on handpump. Service is never less than courteous and the best aspects of a traditional inn are in evidence such as antique settles, old Windsor chairs and flagstones.Outside there are picnic sets on the gravel and plenty of parking beyond.

Varied interesting and fairly priced menu with good sized portions.
Generous open fires and classy ambiance made for an enjoyable lunch with friends.
True hospitality for the traveller.
Popular place, so best to call before arriving and reserve a table.
All staff very helpful, friendly and professional.
