On a day out with our granddaughter to The Forbidden Corner we stopped off here for some lunch. The village is lovely and the exterior of this pub looked quaint and inviting. Staff were friendly and the beer and service was good. I had scampi and potato wedges and although my meal was fine the wedges and the peas were almost cold. My granddaughter had fish and the batter was over thick and ended up being undercooked hence soggy underneath. Not sure the fish was totally cooked. Granddad had meat pie and when I asked him how his meal was he said there was little meat in it. The portions however were very generous. All in all somewhat disappointing. Although the dishes were not pricey it was poor value for money.

We visited this pub twice during our stay in Middleham, and enjoyed our food both times. The interior is quirky, with sayings handwritten on the walls (by the staff?) and features lots of pictures of racehorses which is not surprising given that Middleham is home to quite a few racehorse training yards. Both times we visited the pub had plenty of locals in there both eating and drinking, but we weren't made to feel outsiders at all and were included in conversations at the bar. We enjoyed our food which was high standard pub food chosen from both a regular menu and a chalked list of specials. Prices were good for the quality of the meal, and portions were generous too. The fact we ate there twice speaks for itself!
