I had pork with a big lump of white fat on it. I mean who doesn't crisp the fat on pork ( inedible otherwise ) let alone serve it without a strip of crackling The meat and veg were nice enough to be fair and the waitress was friendly. We enjoyed it until hallway through the meal the chap at next table was served whitebait also on the Sunday menu (a starter l think) and it stunk which when you are eating something other than fish I found offputting but appreciate these clashes in smells and tastes happen in public eating places. The ambience as stated in title was not very friendly and the bar staff seemed to just have continuous rapport with the locals sat permanently at the bar and shouting across to each other over any customers standing at bar. Felt as welcome as a visitor to Royston Vasey tbh.

13 of our extended family (including 4 kids) ate in Richard the Third on halloween 2013 as we were staying nearby at the Old School House. We are all in to good food, and The Richard III did not disappoint. We had a room at the back which was perfect for our needs. The service was charming, when we got our starters we knew the rest of it was going to be good. Nice presentation, tasty, unfussy but delicious rustic food - we are not huge eaters so only a few had starters (garlic prawns and a fantastic pate). followed by mains including a fish pie better than my own, scampi. lasagne and various other dishes. Without our asking they brought the kids food first (best looking fishfingers I've seen), and when we were about to have our mains they brought out colouring books for the kids to keep them occupied whist we ate - which was perfect timing as they were getting tired - so very thoughtful. Desserts were also good. We ate everything up and would have gone again had it not been our last night. We only ate in one other place in the village whilst there which was also very good but for our money - this is the place to beat!

Staying close by, we needed food at tea time but had a 5 year old with us and wasn't sure of going into a Pub - how wrong we were to judge. Very welcoming, food fabulous, kids no problem, loved all the horse memrobillia about the place, our little girl loved it, plus was dressed up for Halloween with the decor, locals offered us food they had ordered also. Excellent pint hubby told me. Will definately go back some time.

Room Tip: Didn't stay only had a meal and a drink, but would imagine very cosy

Just returned from a stay at Richard the Third Middleham. What a refreshing change to see a pub that caters not only for the tourist but also for the locals. Living in a tourist area in Wiltshire we get very frustrated when locals are treated like outcasts in the local pub but welcomed out of season. I take my hat off to the proprietors who have certainly got the balance right.

This is a lively, warm and welcoming pub with excellent food, accommodation, company and watching all the race horse going up to the gallops in the morning is an added bonus.

Would highly recommend this inn to anyone who likes interesting characters and a pub that is still used as a pub and not a turned in a B&B full of uninteresting dull people!

Having been to the Richard the Third some years ago, what a change. The place is now a typical "local". Busy and lively. Friendly patrons and staff. Good food and drink. We stayed two nights and the bedroom was great. The bathroom is a little tired but is spotless and fully functioning. I would recommend this to anyone.

Room Tip: Rooms one and two are at the front overlooking the square. They are therefore over the bar. We heard...

We were staying elsewhere in Middleham and had booked to have dinner on our first night at the pub. Friends in the party had suggested it, having eaten there before and we weren't disappointed. The portions were huge though, so wished I hadn't booked a starter! That said, the starter was fab, garlic prawns. And my fish pie main was delicious. The owners had just taken over when our friends ate there before and they have really made it a great place to visit. Everyone loved their food, the service was great and it was good value too!
