We were 2 adults and two young children
(5 -2)
We chose to eat in the bar area as no children in restaurant area and don't like to annoy people too much
Kids loved the olde worlde bar and seating !!!
Food ok child portions big ours could have shared
Food so so nothing special but home cooked at least better than pub chains
Staff busy but helpful

If you are used to Premier Inns etc the Black Swan is not for you. It's an old building and so expect creaky floorboards, uneven walls and other signs of age. If you can get your head past that (and clearly some reviewers on here cannot), then this is a lovely place to stay. Well kept ale, really good food with generous portions carefully prepared - I would highly recommend the Roe Deer and Wild Mushroom Stroganoff, very friendly service from all of the staff and nice, comfy beds are just some of the things you will enjoy. The owners have started a programme of refurbishment and are fully aware of what needs upgrading, so expect things to improve still further in the next few years. Apart from that, Middleham is a lovely place and a gateway town for Wensleydale walks and other attractions such as the Forbidden Corner (booking office across the road) and the Castle. It's also home to race horses aplenty and the place oozes unspoilt simple beauty. The KGB Deal we got with a free bottle of wine (Temperanillo) if you dine made this fabulous value. we will happily return though, with or without a deal - it worked for us.

Room Tip: If you eat there don't expect rapid city-centre express service...but it's worth the wait...

As we were viiting the area, we decided to have lunch at the Black Swan as the menu on line looked interesting. We arrived just after midday to find stools still on the tables after cleaning the night before and a female behind the bar who served us with some reluctance and certainly no welcome or smile. When we asked for the lunch menu she informed us that 'we are not serving lunch today', no sorry, no smile, nothing; what a misery. One or two other people came in afterwards and appeared to be treated in the same bland manner. I got a diet cola which tasted foul and I can only assume that the mix was wrong as it came from a tap, either that or they were using an inferior syrup; I left it and we went on to another restaurant which was superb! I wouldn't and couldn't recommend this hotel on the basis of our experience and we certainly will not try it again.

As title says this is purely a review of the evening meal experience i had. I do not normally review on such things but after my experience and reading other reviews i thought i better.
Food: The Menu is full of exotic dishes and seafood. To be honest its all bit too much, everything comes with a rich sauce or over complicated 'extras'. Even so i ordered the pork, my partner the bouillabaisse, my 3 year old the spag bol. The pork was cooked perfectly, the potato and veg sides again cooked beautifully, and the sauce was nice although too much! The bouillabaisse was plentiful and tasty and came with an abundance of crusty bread! The spag bol was very rich for a young palette and served with chips and spaghetti which was unnecessary. Overall a nice meal.
Service; The young girl behind the bar and serving was lovely, polite and friendly with a warm smile. The food came about 35 minutes after ordering but on request the children's meal came out after 15 as soon as it was ready which i thought was a nice thought. The landlady was a different kettle of fish, her tone was abrupt, her manner disinterested, and her attitude was frightful. her husband (i'm presuming) was sat at a table with his friend drinking and being a general lout for the duration of our meal. We saw a couple get told "your room has been taken because you weren't here on time" this was in a downpour and frankly disgusting behaviour.
Cleanliness: Food was fine but the pub needs a really good scrub. it may be old but that doesn't excuse dusty carpets and cobwebs. The toilets were freezing and a bit mouldy and damp.
Overall: Lovely food, ok service. Worth a meal if you can wait and put up with a frosty reception.

Room Tip: Sit in the restaurant and not the bar as its cleaner and less cramped. AVOID THE LANDLADY!
