“Great pub, friendly, good food and wonderful location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2013

Traditional Cotswold inn with wonderful views, good food and great beer. Always a very friendly welcome, great service and plenty of charm from the 'locals'. Award-winning beer brewed in the village, busy bar and restaurant – very difficult to find any fault. The local pies are superb and great value – a visit here in summer or winter is just as good – great to sit outside overlooking the green, church and Uley Bury or tucked away inside by a roaring fire. The perfect pub to spend an evening or afternoon in. Great.

This pub has a lot going for it. Pretty village setting, lovely building and good food. What it lacked when I went was any kind of interest or welcome from the staff. We felt we were imposing. No welcome, no form of chat and complete disinterest in us. There was no one else there at all. I wonder why?

I visit the Crown Uley on the odd occasion and when down from London sleep over for a couple of nights as my business is mostly done further into the South-West.

This is indeed a beautiful inn in a stunning village/area the food exceptional value and the Wye Valley bitter so very good it is almost addictive. Some of the locals - mostly working class - prefer the cider but they never get out of order even on a Friday evening when the bar is crowded. Just down the road is the gold award winning and world famous Uley Brewery whose beers are very popular - you might even get to meet Doc Lush and Stew the Brew should you visit. Brewery visits available for a small fee. The French owner often visits.

Visitors arrive from all corners of the globe and are made welcome many vowing to return as indeed many do year on year.

Mary and Ben are often away to gain some relief from the frantic pressures of running this operation but Inn Manager Shareena and staff ensure standards remain exceptionally high. Some times the lawns need a strim but in this weather?!

On a Sunday locally produced cheese and pickled onions are free on the bar which you will not find up the road or anywhere close in the area but do come early cos early birds are rife!

My room has always been clean and comfortable warmed by the woodburner in the lounge-bar/dining area directly below.

If you are looking for a magic place to stay then I would thoroughly recommend the Old Crown at Uley.

I was on business in the area and stayed for two nights at The Old Crown.

A lovely local pub in a "picture postcard" village; there it ends! The bedrooms are grotty and dirty and the room was not cleaned and re-made every morning!

The food is pretty dire, with heavy reliance on excessive microwaving resulting in me just about removing the lining from my mouth it was so hot!

All around the rear of the pub were piles of rubbish (old chairs etc.)

The ONLY saving grace? - the Uley Brewery beer is superb!

We stayed at The Old Crown for two nights as we had a wedding to attend nearby. It is a lovely family orientated pub frequented by the locals. There was a good variety of local beers and ciders and great value for money quality food. We were made to feel very welcome. The breakfast was excellent and plenty of it. Ben and Mary the landlord and landlady were very helpful and knowledgable about the area.

Access to the bedrooms was via a pretty steep staircase so people with certain disabilities may find this difficult. We stayed in the room that has been previously mentioned with the skylights but as we were only there to sleep it didn't really worry us too much. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. The bathroom whilst compact was clean, had a great shower, plenty of hot water and a range of toiletries and shower cap. Our friends stayed in the room opposite and it was extremely spacious containing a double bed a single bed and a settee and a window with a view. Coffee and tea making facilities with biscuits were provided in the room.

It is worth noting that there is very little mobile reception in this area so, if you need to stay in contact with the world then you will need to be willing to drive around to find a signal. Mary was very helpful and offered to arrange a taxi for us and the use the pub phone when our friends needed to contact their son.

All in all a very pleasant stay and we would go back.

Room Tip: Ask for room 1 which is large with a window

After reading about this pub, a seventeenth century coaching inn, on Trip Advisor we decided to take a friend out to lunch there for her birthday, particularly as it was fairly local to us. The web site is well worth looking at!

The dining area is in keeping with the age of the establishment and very comfortable with a lovely log fire. Good atmosphere. The toilets were clean and well decorated.

We did not see the accommodation, but I should imagine it was good.

There was good choice of beers.

The food! Starter, main course and pudding were all excellent and plentiful. Although my wife rated the lasagne just 6/10 (and she particularly loves lasagne), my Lamb Shank with peas and mashed pots was superb and our guest's local Gammon and egg with onion rings and mushrooms melted in the mouth. All well presented.

We will definitely go there again.

We stayed one night here, the room was good, looked like it had just been refurbished, and was very warm and comfortable. We stayed on a Friday night and the atmosphere in the pub was amazing, clearly lots of local people in. We enjoyed our meal and prices were reasonable. Plenty of easy car parking. Sarah (I think) behind the bar was very welcoming and friendly - we hadn't booked ahead, just called in on off chance. Great walks around the area.
