“Wonderful 50th birthday celebration...”
Reviewed May 27, 2012

We recently hosted a 50th birthday celebration at The Wheatsheaf Inn for 8 couples including afternoon tea, a cocktail reception, a fabulous black tie dinner in the private dining room and a casual brunch the next day with the best Bloody Mary's ever. It was a truly fantastic weekend where everything was just perfect. We had pre-assigned our guests' rooms to cater for invidual preferences for baths and showers remembering that some of the rooms have bath tubs actually in the rooms. Everyone loved their rooms, all beautifully and individually decorated in tasteful greys although a few of the girls were bemused by the lack of wardrobes and bemoaned the lack of a decent sized mirror in the bedroom. The complimentary nuts, crisps and chocolate came in very handy however! Our dinner in the private dining room was fantastic and we were well taken care of by Tess who was with us to the very end of our evening at 1.00am! The room has the benefit of a Sonos music system, so with two aspiring DJs in our party, we had a riotous evening of impromptu dancing to songs from our youth! The food was excellent and, having gaps between the courses to allow for speeches, was not a problem. We had brought a bottle of port, which had been a gift, and Peter had immediately offered to decant it for us earlier in the day. The following day we all met for brunch once again in the private dining room. I thought it was a little chilly and a fire was immediately lit before our guests arrived. Great food and the best Bloody Mary's ever ended a perfect birthday celebration. Prior to the weekend, I was a bit concerned about the lack of communication with the pub. There wasn't one point of contact and e mails often went unanswered for days. However, my fears were unfounded and everything went of beautifully and in great style. The Wheatsheaf Inn may be a bit laid back for some but they have a formula that clearly works. As we left, Jeremy told us that they were once again full that evening, even on a Sunday! We look forward to another visit very soon.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 9, an Excellent Room, which had a fabulous bathroom. Although having seen some of...

A bit like the curates egg - somethings excellent, some things not so.
The bedroom was excellently furnished and decorated, with a very comfortable bed BUT no practicallity for living. Nothing to hang your clothes on, no bin, Bath in the middle of the bedroom, no bright light in bathroom or bedroom, to put makeup on or to have a shave etc. No socket anyware near a mirror to dry your hair, I think they have tried to be too clever and smart but in practice, it does not make for an enjoyable stay. Most of the staff seemed to think they were doing you a favour by even talking to you, a good example, at dinner and breakfast no body bothered to speak to you or help you when you came down. Food was just ok for these prices but the wine list was a joke way too expensive with nothing reasonably priced, overall you can have better experiences for less money in the same area. Will not be returning.

We stayed in room 6, which had a gorgeous comfy bed and open plan bathroom as part of the main room. A fabulous large walk in shower and two lovely basins (separate loo) - it was painted in shades of grey with black furniture and accessories. If you like pale or colour this may not be the room for you but we found it wonderfully stylish and interesting.

The staff were absolutely lovely. Helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and a good sense of humour. Nothing seemed too much trouble. The food was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner and breakfast and would recommend it without reservation. Priced appropriately. Do try the Charcuterie platter if you get the chance!

Lovely snug lounge and we enjoyed a cosy afternoon tea in there. The private dining room really has the 'wow factor! Would love a reason to have a party in there!

Its not a big place at all but its so well thought out. There is a lovely garden area at the back for a drink or meal outside.

Overall we had a fantastic night away, it was a treat and felt like one. We were happy with our choice and feel the owners have done a great job of making this a cosy, stylish and interesting place to stay, with lovely little touches that we appreciated very much (including gorgeous toiletries, different and delicious snacks in the room, and a little kit to help with any bits you may have forgotten). And all this topped by the lovely staff.

Room Tip: Having read comments on trip advisor, we chose a 'very good' room for the extra space.

Stayed in room 7. Odd checking in moment (you check into the rooms at the bar). Stood at the bar with luggage expecting some form of greeting from the staff behind the bar. Nothing!? Had to initiate the check in myself. Staff seemed friendly and helpful though.
Room 7 was cosy but clean (well it appeared so anyway). Not much in the way of furniture,...a desk, a chair, a comfy king bed and (only) two hooks to hang clothes. Not too much of a problem as only staying a couple of nights. Would be useful to have a couple more hanging options. The window over looked the back garden which during the day was quite a pleasant view. Room was oddly extremely hot though.
Food and drinks in the pub was nice. Good atmosphere, appears to be where the locals gather. The food in the restaurant was very good (v good service) and followed nicely by drinks in the bar afterwards. Again bar service was v good. All good so far.
It's returning to the room when you realise that sleeping is going to be a problem. Whilst the atmosphere at the bar, with the music kicking out at a fair volume feels fun and lively. The sounds from the bar is every bit as clear in the rooms also! In addition to that, it appears that the rear garden is used as the main smoking area.
I have no problem with noise (I live in the city) and I have no problem with late night revellers (we are on holiday after all) but you would expect it to die down past midnight (it is marketed as a country B&B afterall). if you were expecting a quiet country B&B this is probably not the place for you. FYI, things wound down between 1 to 2am on the weekend evenings we were there.
Complementary breakfast was good selection of cereals and toast. Service was very good and attentive (just as the evening meal).
All in all a pleasant place. Good food, friendly staff, lively atmosphere but not as relaxing as we had thought it would be. Also the cleaners need go back to cleaning school. Surfaces not at eye level were covered in dust, and they neglected to empty the bin in our room for the whole weekend we stayed there.
In summary, very nice looking b&b, very good service and food, lively evenings, nice small village but next time would take with me a duster, a portable hanging rail and some ear plugs.

Room Tip: Room 7 was pleasant, small, dusty, no storage/hanging, facing onto the back garden and baking hot da...

My husband has a bad leg so room no 10 is perfect, and the bed is squishy soft and enormous.I have no problem at all with the delicious bathroom potions and lotions in big bottles, so much more generous than those twee little bottles.I never hang up my clothes but always use a chair so not bothered by hanging space. The food is very good, and breakfast faultless. The dining room is always buzzing, and creates a great atmosphere...will def be back.

We stayed here before going to a concert in Cheltenham, me and my parents, we needed a quick supper and had such a delicious and fun time we nearly missed the show! it was such a relief to get back to my super comfy bedroom and I loved the decor and beautiful velvet edged linen curtains. The shower was awesome and beautiful basin and loo. Breakfast was just perfect and lovely relaxed atmosphere, we had some non patrons joining us for breakfast and ended up being quite a party but no one seemed to mind, well done wheat sheaf can't wait to come back with my husband, I know he will love it and hopefully have dinner in the garden it looks fantastic.

Staff are rude, charge you for things they say they won't, don't fix things they have been told about and owner, Sam will act unprofessional in the event he is shown to be in the wrong. Rooms are not cleaned. No place to hang clothes.
