“Small Room , Good Breakfast”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

We stayed the one night and found that we had a pretty small room overlooking the front. The room was about 1/3 smaller than a typical Premier Inn room, which is not great considering the price. There was one small chair tucked in the corner by the fridge, and was literally as wide as the bed and two small side tables.

As a result the room was hot, and we had to leave the window open on a Saturday night, which invited the street noise in.

Found the decorations 'old styled' which made the room appear dark and smaller. The mattress was soft and uncomfortable.

A lot of the reviews on here give the hotel a five rating - but they are mainly rating the restaurant, To be fair the breakfast in the morning was great - good fresh local ingredients, and the staff overall were very good. This is the only reason it got a 3 rather than a 2 rating.

Would I stay here again? No, I would go to the local Premier Inn and get a bigger room for 1/2 the price.

When we were planning our trip, we thought of staying in London and travelling to Harwich the next day to join our cruise ship. Thankfully we decided to go straight to Harwich. The Pier Hotel is about 10 minutes from the Cruise Terminal in Harwich and has many surprising bonuses. It is located next to the harbour and has excellent harbour views and there is a nice place to sit outside and look out at the sea. There are several small museums in town and a number of pubs and eating establishments. We ate lunch, dinner and breakfast ( the latter included) at the Hotel and were not disappointed. The food was very well prepared and the staff friendly. We slept quite well in a comfortable bed. The staff helped us with our luggage (no elevator) and the area at night is quite quiet. The Heritage Trail was quite interesting as well.

Room Tip: All rooms would be quiet but rooms in the annex are the newest but also the most expensive. The 15 r...

Great DBB rate, added Sunday afternoon tea, but had to bring that home in a doggie bag, as so stuffed from 2 stunning Dinners and 2 comprehensive breakfasts. Pottered about Harwich Town - leaflet in the hotel shows the Harwich Historic Society trail, and we spent an hour or so inside the Redoubt fort.

Hotel was very comfortable, but the staff topped it all. Waiting staff Lucy, Ellie1, Ellie2 and Claire, and Restaurant Managers Chris and Nick made it so enjoyable - willing to chat, willing to leave us alone when needed.

So glad we booked, and we will be looking for another excuse to come back - and this time may bring the teenage children as well, who would have loved the menu selection of fish and the steaks...

Room Tip: We had room 6, main building - at back away from restaurant side, quiet and sun-trap in morning.

We started with cocktails which were really, really good then moved up to our table. The staff could not have been more helpful (perhaps a little too caring...checking all was ok when my table was in the middle of a big laugh) and the food was fantastic.
Loved it and would return.

I booked the hotel as a treat for my partner's birthday, and what a treat it turned out to be. The room was tasteful and immaculately maintained.
ALL staff were very well trained and provided an excellent service throughout our 2 night stay. The food was to die for and service yet again spot on.
The restaurant has scenic views over the sea and provided the icing on a beautifully made cake.
I was delighted with our stay and could find no fault with any aspect of the Pier Hotel.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: We stayed with the 'Spring Fever' deal and had an excellent room in the smaller hotel provid...

We enjoyed a superb meal at The PIer on Friday evening, the staff were welcoming and friendly and the table by the window had views over the Harbour on a pleasant evening.
The food was excellent we all had fish dishes which were very enjoyable, and the puddings were delicious.
We will certainly return to The Pier on a summer evening to enjoy the sea views as well as the food and service.

Lovely hotel which does fab food - We had a room with a sea view and it was superb. 2 restaurants - more casual dining downstairs and really plush restaurant on first floor where we ate. Quite pricey but well worth it. Nice friendly little pub just round the corner for a pre-dinner drink.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a sea view - looking out on the docks - quite interesting watching boats com...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We thank you for your feedback, however we do not respond to individual comments. Following on from a 1.5 million reinvestment over the last 5 months, The Pier at Harwich is once again open and set to become East Anglia's number one coastal destination for food and drink. The redefined brasserie is located on the first floor of the completely modernised 1860 listed building in historic Harwich. Experience all-day dining (all-year-round) and outdoor dining - whenever the sun shines - with a menu celebrating modern classics, an exciting grill menu and wonderful fresh fish and shellfish landed on The Pier's doorstep. Guests can select from a predominantly European wine list or enjoy Prosecco-based cocktails, craft beers and cask ales. The stripped back and raw textured interior, designed by Geraldine Milsom, makes reference to the industrious and hardworking Harwich port, but achieves a balance between function, luxury and glamour. The harbour wall is only 20 metres from the door and The Pier's newly extended first floor balcony (for drinks and outdoor dining) overlooks the water, ships and working docks. With estuary views from every table, The Pier, only a stone's throw from the confluence of the Stour and Orwell estuaries is a very special destination for lovers of great food and drink. NAVYÄRD on the ground floor is a continental bar and terrace adjacent to the working harbour, the ideal place for fun and relaxation. Cask ales, craft beers, a great drinks list, Prosecco-based cocktails and one of the most carefully sourced and extensive gin lists makes the NAVYÄRD 'the' go-to bar for The Pier's neighbours, friends and welcomed guests. The NAVYÄRD is undeniably and unashamedly a 'love letter to the continent' - celebrating and championing the influential and historic links that Harwich holds with Scandanavia and wider Europe. The wines, beers, ales, drinks list and a gin library have been sourced from across Europe and are complemented throughout the day by Nordic-inspired small-plated food. Great coffee, fresh pastries and the simplest tastiest late breakfasts (think eggs, rye bread and avocado) through to open Scandinavian sandwiches, sharing platters and fresh oysters. The 14 bedrooms are individually styled to match the seascape and take full advantage of the brilliant light that you only get when staying on the coast. Harwich enjoys glorious sunsets with molten coloured horizons and the setting sun on the Stour estuary is a special feature of staying at The Pier. All bedrooms are equipped with complimentary soft drink mini-bars, Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products, Sky In-Room and free Wi-Fi making The Pier an exceptional small hotel. ... more   less
