My fiance booked for my 40th birthday. We took advantage of the "weekend starts here " deal- dinner, bed and breakfast. He had arranged flowers for my birthday, an upgrade and champagne. We stayed in the Mayflower suite, which was amazing. Very clean, high spec and the bed was extremely comfortable.
The food in the restuarant was amazing HAVE THE FISH SOUP STARTER! best ever. We felt thoroughly spoilt from beginning to end. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable, with the maitre d giving great advice regarding food choice and wine. Breakfast was lovely also. Will definitely return.

A friend and I stayed overnight at The Pier as absolutely no decent hotels in Clacton where I was visiting!

It was really lovely. The staff was so attentive and accommodating. The room was immaculately clean, comfortable beds and everything we could wish for including big fluffy bath sheets! It had a sofa where we could sit to admire the wonderful view of the harbour and across to Felixstowe. The constantly changing nautical scene provided endless and fascinating entertainment as did the wonderful sunset that evening.

I knew The Pier as a Specialist Fish Restaurant some 30 years ago when it was 'The Place' for the locals to eat. am itprovides food of the same quality - beautiful fresh fish and cooked and presented to perfection.

Surprisingly. There was no overnight noise from the road nor from the harbour.

It's definitely a 'must have' and I thoroughly recommend it.

Decided to take advantage of a deal that included overnight accomodation, evening meal (no limitations on menu choices) and breakfast. When we arrived our room had been upgraded so we stayed in the main hotel building overlooking the water. The room was spacious, decorated to a high standard and plenty of small touches that I noted (fan for the heat, extra blankets & fan heater for the cold).
We ate in the Harbourside restaurant and had an excellent meal, the choices of fish dishes are superb but the Dedham vale steak was also perfectly cooked.

I woudl definitely stay and eat here again.

Our weekend stay at The Pier was the latest of occasional ones during the last two years, and once again we were not disappointed.
We have stayed in a number of hotels in France over the years and The Pier is the only one in close proximity to us that has similar standards and ethos.
Like all good hotels the success of a stay is down to the staff and the service they provide, and The Pier has excellent staff in all areas - restaurant managers, waiting staff, kitchen staff and housekeeping. All play their part in making guests welcome and special. Nothing is ever too much trouble.
Once again on this visit we were fortunate enough to have the Mayflower Suite, their best room, which is more like a lounge with a bed in it! Comfortable furnishings (large double sofa and two deep armchairs) and a fantastic view from the wide windows across the sea to Shotley (one night we were treated to a magnificent sunset but I don't think the hotel can take credit for that!)
For our three-night stay we ate each night in the Harbourside Restaurant, situated upstairs in the hotel's main building. The Harbourside has a well-deserved reputation for seafood thanks to the efforts over many years of head chef Chris Oakley and his team. Each night we had a superb meal, quality food expertly cooked from, where possible, locally sourced ingredients served by properly trained staff who know what they are doing, and do it brilliantly.
That we have stayed at The Pier before and will do so again shows what they do they do really well!

The Pier Hotel has a prime location at H’penny Pier facing onto the Stour and Orwell Estuaries. One can walk directly from the hotel, along the sea wall round the headland to the next town or explore the Town of Harwich which is behind the Hotel. Bedrooms for the hotel are located in a neighbouring two storied building about 30 meters door to door from the entrance to the Hotel itself. We stayed in one of the “Superior Bedrooms” on the first floor. Whist the furniture was of adequate quality the room was too small for the bed and sitting in front of the vanity mirror was severely hampered. The other furniture gave the feeling of being crammed into the room. The bathroom was adequate if small as were the adjacent wardrobes the doors of which opened onto the bathroom door. We considered the room not to be of Superior Standard.
The Harbourside Restaurant upstairs in the Main Hotel building serves good food and wine at a reasonable price. The staff are attentive and friendly. Some tables have views over the Estuary.
The breakfast area was large and the food quality and variety was good. The staff were attentive and helpful.

We wanted a one night out away from the kids but not too far from our home. After doing very little research, we stumbled upon The Pier at Harwich. The hotel is very quaint and charming. Everyone we met was friendly and the service was outstanding. Our room had a great view of the pier and was clean and spacious. We ate in the Harbourside resaurant and were thouroughly impressed. The food was outstanding, recommendations spot-on and service was fantastic. The town of Harwich itself is nice though very very small in terms of attractions or activities. If you are looking for a night away or happen to find yourself in Harwich, The Pier hotel is definitely the place to stay.

We stayed at the Pier for one night after staying in Aldeburgh for 2 nights on a short break. We arrived in the afternoon tired and looking forward to our evening meal. We booked a table downstairs for 8.15pm and on arrival was told that there would be a 45 minute wait for a table. After having a drink in the bar we were called to the table after about 30 minutes. We duly placed our order and sat there with our drinks watching as everyone around us were coming and going, eating their first and second courses while we waited and waited. Eventually after much conversation with staff we were told it wouldn't be much longer. Our starter arrived at 9.30pm, an hour and a quarter after the table was booked. We don't think this is the way to run a busy hotel. Apart from this the food was fine. Stayed in their other hotels, Milsoms, The Talbooth, and they were good.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We thank you for your feedback, however we do not respond to individual comments. Following on from a 1.5 million reinvestment over the last 5 months, The Pier at Harwich is once again open and set to become East Anglia's number one coastal destination for food and drink. The redefined brasserie is located on the first floor of the completely modernised 1860 listed building in historic Harwich. Experience all-day dining (all-year-round) and outdoor dining - whenever the sun shines - with a menu celebrating modern classics, an exciting grill menu and wonderful fresh fish and shellfish landed on The Pier's doorstep. Guests can select from a predominantly European wine list or enjoy Prosecco-based cocktails, craft beers and cask ales. The stripped back and raw textured interior, designed by Geraldine Milsom, makes reference to the industrious and hardworking Harwich port, but achieves a balance between function, luxury and glamour. The harbour wall is only 20 metres from the door and The Pier's newly extended first floor balcony (for drinks and outdoor dining) overlooks the water, ships and working docks. With estuary views from every table, The Pier, only a stone's throw from the confluence of the Stour and Orwell estuaries is a very special destination for lovers of great food and drink. NAVYÄRD on the ground floor is a continental bar and terrace adjacent to the working harbour, the ideal place for fun and relaxation. Cask ales, craft beers, a great drinks list, Prosecco-based cocktails and one of the most carefully sourced and extensive gin lists makes the NAVYÄRD 'the' go-to bar for The Pier's neighbours, friends and welcomed guests. The NAVYÄRD is undeniably and unashamedly a 'love letter to the continent' - celebrating and championing the influential and historic links that Harwich holds with Scandanavia and wider Europe. The wines, beers, ales, drinks list and a gin library have been sourced from across Europe and are complemented throughout the day by Nordic-inspired small-plated food. Great coffee, fresh pastries and the simplest tastiest late breakfasts (think eggs, rye bread and avocado) through to open Scandinavian sandwiches, sharing platters and fresh oysters. The 14 bedrooms are individually styled to match the seascape and take full advantage of the brilliant light that you only get when staying on the coast. Harwich enjoys glorious sunsets with molten coloured horizons and the setting sun on the Stour estuary is a special feature of staying at The Pier. All bedrooms are equipped with complimentary soft drink mini-bars, Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products, Sky In-Room and free Wi-Fi making The Pier an exceptional small hotel. ... more   less
