We stayed last Friday and loved the Alma. Our room was spacious and full of character. The pub was exactly what a pub should be - atmospheric, friendly, good beer selection, great wine list. A very decent band was belting out classics the night we were there. We had an excellent dinner - the Dover sole was particularly good. Our breakfasts the following morning (full English, one of them veggie) were really tasty and we were offered more of everything. Everybody who worked there was so friendly and it really felt like nothing was too much trouble. We were recommended the Alma by some musician friends and would recommend it to others without hesitation. A brilliant place.

We visited the Alma for a night stay in January. Staff were welcoming and friendly, doing their upmost to really make us feel at home.
The food was hearty - exactly what we needed for a blusterous winter weekend. The atmosphere of the bar and dining rooms is warm and cosy.
Such a fantastic place for a local stay.
Can't rate highly enough. This was our second stay and we'll definitely be staying again!

I had recourse to visit Harwich one afternoon recently and was looking for a place to eat lunch. I drove around and saw a pub down a side street away from the riverside and chose that one. The pub in question was the Alma Inn and from the outside it looked authentic to its mid-Victorian origins and not “modernised”, which to me is a euphemism for “ruined”. On entering, it seemed that the Victorian authenticity had been continued from its exterior as the wooden floors and original bar area felt so right. Now a great pub can be ruined with poor bar staff but on this occasion the staff exceeded the beauty of the pub. Two super friendly bar maids who made me, a first time visitor, feel so welcome. In particular Shaz who took me around the pub and showed me old photographs of the pub adorning the walls. A lovely, much appreciated gesture. The beer was great, Adnams so you know it’s going to be good and the food was so well cooked and a reasonable price too. I live too far away to visit this pub regularly but if I get the chance I will definitely return as this is just what a pub should be. In fact, it’s named after the Battle of the Alma, a Crimean War battle fought on September 20th 1854 when the British army (and her allies) crossed the Alma river and defeated the Russians. The word Alma means “apple” in the Tartar language and rather nicely now this place has become “the apple of my eye” when it comes to pubs in Harwich !!

Thank you for your review and insight Tony, it was lovely to meet you. If you find yourself back in Harwich again please pop in, the Steak dinner might be pricier than this time but will be just as delicious!

We spent New Years Day at the Alma and really enjoyed our stay. The building is full of character, staff are very helpful, great food and rooms are lovely. The Alma is also dog friendly which makes life much easier for dog owners. If you register with them they will sometimes send out promotions which are amazing value for money. I would highly recommend it. Photos uploaded.
