“Gorgeous little B&b”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2014 via mobile

This is a charming B&b in Saffron Walden, UK. I had room number 2 which was a good size and had a very comfy bed. The hotel dates back to Oliver Cromwell and was recently refurbished to modern standards but still maintains the charm and ambience you would expect in such an ancient place. There is a restaurant/ bar on the main level with a couple of fireplaces. There are several options for breakfast and the food is good. The only issue with my room was that it's on the the main road in Saffron Walden and was noisy but I did get used to it after the first night. There is a more quiet room in the back. The staff is helpful and accommodating. Since there are only six rooms in the inn, if you want to book one, don't wait too long.

There's a very nice ambience and gentle background buzz in The Cross Keys now. Service was good throughout the evening. Overall, the food was good, particularly the starters and main courses; the lamb cutlets with accompanying shepards pie really was vey good as was the sea bass. The puddings were not quite so successful with 'all the fun if the fair' being a classic case of less is sometimes better! The lemon posset was good enough to stand on it's own; all the other elements, such as mini doughnuts, that accompanied it, were not so good and unnecessary. However, this did not detract from what was a great evening out.

This place has been renovated recently and does have a pleasant atmosphere but the service is poor - today the staff were so busy buying something from a man who came in and popping in and out that our coffee stood on the side and by the time we got it it was cold. We asked for it to be replaced and they brought the wrong coffee and still no sign of the croissant we had ordered. We did go here on an earlier occasion as it looks as if it should be a pleasant place - but no the coffee is not good , the food mediocre and the staff not focused - we will not be going back !

We have eaten here before but not late on a Sunday afternoon; about 4.30pm. So I guess the staff had been really busy at lunchtime and by the time we arrived they had just about lost interest? That would be a good description of the meal as it was very average and not worth the money. Won't be rushing back as I raved about it last time but this time it was not very good at all.

Today was a special day for me and Mom it was the laying of my fathers ashes and his 75th birthday .Once this was done I took my mother to the Cross Keys Hotel and Bar in Saffron Walden .
It has recently had a refurb to a high standard , we were greeted very quickly by the floor manager in a very polite and friendly way and shown to our table .
We had the three course set menu at little over £15 per head .
I can honestly say it was one of the nicest and most relaxed places for a lunch I have been to in a long time and the food first class .
We had grilled sardines on toast for the starter each and the beef and ale pie with new potatoes with perfectly cooked vegetables and drinks which all came to a reasonable £77 .
Will I go again yes I will - would I recommend it Yes !

this review is based on 2 visits over the last month , the first visit was excellent , the 2nd , not quite so good

the place has been refurbished a few years ago and looks great , nice atmosphere , the staff are good , although probably not quite enough for when it's really busy , the food is of a high standard and well cooked
the bad points were that on the 2nd visit we were in the front room which had loads of candles and with the halogen lights you could see a smog of candle smoke , this disappeared once the lovely log fire got going , but we did come home smelling like we'd been standing next to a bonfire ,
the wait from ordering to being served was just at the point of becoming too much , about an hour on both occaisions , but if you're in good company this is not a major problem ,but the place was packed and was not that surprising
prices are slightly higher than average , we paid £120 for 4 mains and desserts and a couple of drinks
on the first visit i had the cod and chips which was awesome the 2nd visit i had the steak and ale pir which was very good , but only came with veg , could have done with pototo ,fries etc
all in all , well worth a visit ,just needs a bit of teaking here and there to make it better ,will definately be back

Rebecca and I had lunch here this week. Simply delicious, great service and great surroundings. We had cream of onion soup which was lovely. I also had smoked salmon with a garden mint sorbet. It was an explosion of taste and textures. The coffee could have been stronger but that was the only negative. I would recommend this place anytime and especially after a visit to the market on a Tuesday.
